Residents of Southern California and near Mesa, Ariz., can score a bonus of up to $150 after opening a free checking account at NuVision Federal Credit Union and following some relatively simple steps.
The first step is making a minimum deposit of at least $100 to open the account at the credit union, based in Huntington Beach, Calif. Then you’ll need to make a direct deposit of at least $200 within 90 days of the account opening and sign up for eStatements.
Do that, and you’ll receive a $50 reward after 90 days.
To get the next $50, make at least five signature-based debit card transactions per month for each of the first three months.
Then use online bill pay to make at least three payments per month for each of the first three months, and you’ll receive another $50 reward.
The offer is not available to current or previous checking account holders.
The account pays just 0.05% APY on balances of at least $2,500, so you’re not going to accumulate any savings here.
Checking accounts are generally overlooked as a way to earn cash, but checking bonuses and rewards checking accounts can be a way to build up balances or earn decent rates at a time when the best savings and money market accounts pay about 1.00% APY.
While anyone can join the credit union, the bonus offer is only available for residents of certain ZIP codes in Southern California and Arizona.
You need to stop by one of the branches the credit union has at about 20 locations to redeem rewards.
The credit union caters to Boeing Co. employees and their family members in the two regions as well as employees of dozens of other organizations.
But anyone else can join the credit union by becoming a member of the American Consumer Council, a nonprofit consumer education organization. Joining the council carries no extra cost.
You just need to open a savings account with a minimum $5 deposit, and then you can open other accounts.
