Wanted: Your Credit Card Complaints

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau wants to hear from your.Credit card complaints. We know you’ve got ’em.

And like a good counselor, the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau wants you to get those complaints off your chest.

It has a handy form on its website ( that allows you to submit credit card complaints directly to the agency. You can even chat with an agency representative if you have questions.

Born out of the financial crisis, the CFPB — the financial cop on the street — officially opens for business today a year after President Obama signed legislation authorizing its creation.

The bureau has a broad charge to improve disclosure on loan forms, gather consumer feedback and enforce financial regulations on products ranging from mortgages and student loans to auto financing and credit cards.

And while it’s already jumped into the mortgage fray, the agency says it intends to make credit card regulation and disclosure a top priority.

The bureau has examined the outcome of the Credit CARD Act of 2009, which restricted late fees and interest rate hikes on credit cards. It found “over-limit fees had been significantly curtailed.”

From the bureau’s report on what it has accomplished even before it gained enforcement authority:

The CARD Act has pushed in the right direction. It has brought about significant reforms in both the pricing practices of card issuers and the information provided to consumers. Even so, there are a lot of moving parts in a credit card price, and there is still room for improvement in the transparency of this market. The Bureau’s next challenge will be to further clarify price and risk and make it easier for consumers to make direct product comparisons.

Public outreach is a big part of this process, which is why the complaint form can be a useful tool. If you have a billing dispute, a beef about credit card marketing or the clarity over cash-advance fees, head on over.
