Top Northern Trust CD Rates: 1.05%

You'll need a minimum deposit of $10,000 to purchase one of these CDs.Not only are Northern Trust Bank’s CD rates poor, you have to pony up a minimum of $10,000 to buy one.

How poor? Not a single rate is above average.

Since the Chicago-headquartered bank known for its asset-management services, with 85 offices in 18 states, doesn’t list CD rates on its website (, you have to call for rates.

According to the representative I spoke with, each of the 18 states can have different rates. I had him pull rates for California, Florida, Illinois, New York and Texas for comparison purposes.

They differed by only a few basis points here and there — in other words, no one’s winning.

Northern Trust Bank’s highest rate can be found in Florida: 1.05% APY for the 60-month term.

The rest of the states I checked earn 1.00% APY.

The average annual yield offered by large banks and thrifts for 60-month CDs is 1.19% APY; the leader on our CD Rates Leaderboard pays 2.20% APY.

A quick recap of the best CD rates I found at Northern Trust Bank:

3-month CD rate is 0.05% APY in Florida versus an average rate of 0.15% APY. (Leaderboard leader is 0.80% APY.)

6-month CD rate is 0.10% APY in Florida versus an average rate of 0.22% APY. (Leaderboard leader is 0.88% APY.)

You can only buy Northern Trust Bank’s certificates of deposit if you live in a state where it has a presence, and you need to visit a branch in person.

There are definitely better deals out there, and you’ll find them if you compare Northern Trust Bank’s returns with the best CD rates from scores of other banks in our extensive database.
