Top 6-Month CD Rates Well Above Average

The best 6-month CD rates you’ll find here are now exactly four times better than the average rate paid by banks and thrifts throughout the country.

Nexity Bank offers the best nationally available deal at 1.12% APY with a $1,000 minimum deposit. The average rate, according to our most recent survey, is 0.28%.

Just weeks after the FDIC seized Birmingham-based Nexity last month, it increased yield on several rate terms, including 6-month CDs, passing Aurora Bank for the best nationally available deal.

So far, Nexity’s new owner has made good on its promise to “continue to build a national deposit base.”

Nexity’s leap to the top left Aurora and Ascencia tied for second place. Both are paying 1.07% APY.

Aurora, which has branches in Wilmington, Del., and Jersey City, N.J., has a $1,000 minimum deposit.

Ascencia, the online division of PBI Bank in Louisville, Ky., requires a $500 minimum deposit.

Other 6-month CD rates worthy of our CD Rates Leaderboard are:

1.01% APY at VirtualBank, which is the online division of Lydian Private Bank, based in Palm Beach, Fla., and requires a $10,000 minimum deposit.

1.00% APY at Pacific Mercantile Bank, which has seven branches in southern California and requires a $10,000 minimum deposit.

1.00% APY at Colorado Federal Savings Bank, an online bank based in Greenwood Village, Colo., that requires a $5,000 minimum deposit.

1.00% APY at Sanibel Captiva Community Bank, which has three branches in southwest Florida and requires a $1,000 minimum deposit.

Banks and credit unions qualify for our rankings by imposing no restrictions on who can buy their certificates of deposit, either online or through the mail.
