Top 6-Month CD Rates Hold Above 1%

The best nationally available 6-month CD rates are nearly four times as good as the average rates offered by the country’s big banks and thrifts.

Aurora Bank leads the pack at 1.08%So, if you’re in the market for a short-term certificate of deposit, pay attention: We have five rates that are better than the rest.

At the top is Aurora Bank, which is offering 1.08% APY with a $1,000 minimum deposit on its 6-month CDs.

Aurora Bank, which has branches in Wilmington, Del., and Jersey City, N.J., has lowered and raised its rates by 0.01% often enough recently to be annoying. The bank last adjusted its rates March 9.

As always, right on Aurora Bank’s heels is Nexity Bank. The online bank based in Birmingham, Ala., is offering 1.07% APY with a $1,000 minimum deposit.

Other top 6-month CD rates are:

1.05% APY at OneWest Bank, which has 82 branches in southern California and requires a $1,000 minimum deposit.

1.05% APY at Colorado Federal Savings Bank, an online bank based in Greenwood Village, Colo., that requires a $5,000 minimum deposit.

1.02% APY at Goldwater Bank, which has a single location in Scottsdale, Ariz., and requires a $5,000 minimum deposit.

All beat the average rate of 0.29% APY that large banks and thrifts are currently offering.

Banks and credit unions qualify for our rankings by imposing no restrictions on who can buy their certificates of deposit, either online or through the mail.

As always, check out our CD Rates Leaderboard for the top nationally available rates.
