This Promotion Better Than A Free Toaster

FirstBank logoAny way you slice it, it’s a cut above a toaster.

A major Colorado bank is giving away a tablet computer to new checking account customers.

At a time when cash bonuses are popping up at banks and credit unions around the country as a means of attracting new checking customers, FirstBank is harking back to the “old days,” when banks gave out free toasters to butter up new customers.

But FirstBank, based in Lakewood, Colo., is going with a hotter option – a new Kindle Fire HD to anyone in Colorado, Arizona or Riverside County, Calif., who opens a Free Checking account and then receives direct deposits or makes online bill payments.

First, you’ll need to open the checking account, which has no fees and no minimum balance requirements. It pays no interest.

Then you’ll need to enroll in online banking, and either receive a direct deposit of your paycheck, pension check or government benefit check of at least $300, or make at least three online bill payments. The direct deposit or bill payments must occur within 60 days of opening your account.

Once you do that, within 90 days of opening your account you’ll be emailed a redemption code so you can get your new Kindle Fire HD. The list price for the tablet is $199 on Amazon.com, but the online retailer now has it on sale for $169.

FirstBank has more than 115 branches in three states. In terms of deposits, it’s the second-largest bank in the state of Colorado. It also has five branches in California and a dozen locations in Arizona. You can stop by a branch to open your account or do so online.
