The Forgotten Perks Of Credit Cards

Credit cards often come with things like extended warranty protection and travel insurance. When shopping for a credit card, we tend to focus on things like interest rates, introductory bonuses and rewards programs.

These are the most important considerations, but there are a few credit card perks to look for, as well.

Here are the three most common and most valuable:

Extended warranty protection
When you buy an item, it generally comes with a limited-time manufacturer’s warranty. But if your credit card offers it, you can get as much as an extra year tacked on to that warranty.

Let’s say your TV breaks after the initial warranty expires, but during your additional one-year warranty provided by your credit card. If you call your card company and provide proper documentation, it will take care of arranging for repair or replacement.

24-hour roadside assistance
If you’re not a member of AAA and you break down late in the evening, your options are limited.

Luckily, if you call the customer service number on the back of your credit card, the rep can take care of sending a tow truck or roadside assistant and might even be able to help with a rental car.

Depending on which credit card you have, this service carries a fee or is free.

Travel Insurance
Many credit card issuers provide travel insurance of up to $100,000 for you and your immediate family.

Should a loved one pass away while on vacation, your credit card acts as somewhat of a life insurance policy, covering against accidental death or dismemberment if you purchase your tickets with the credit card.

Many credit cards also offer perks like select seating at events and discounts on travel packages if you book through their website.

Among the best at perks is American Express. But ask your issuer for details on what perks it offers.
