Texas, Home Of The Super-Sized CD Rates

We fond a number of institutions with great CD rates.A couple months back, we wrote about all the great deals on CD rates available to Iowa residents.

Texas is another state where yields are plentiful — especially in this environment of low interest rates.

There are even some institutions that still have offers approaching (and, in one case, hitting) 3%.

Remember, we lost the last nationally available 3% yield in September 2011.

There are a number of Texas deals on our list of the best credit union and local deals, including:

  • A 30-month CD that pays 3.00% APY at NavyArmy Community Credit Union.
  • A 60-month CD that pays 2.53% APY at Space City Credit Union.
  • A 60-month CD that pays 2.10% APY at The Mint National Bank.

These all pay well more than the best nationally available deals on our CD Rates Leaderboard.

But we’ve noticed many other good rates at banks and credit unions we’ve featured in the last year.

So we decided to do a roundup of the best CD rates in Texas. (This isn’t all-inclusive, so if you see something better, give us a shout.)

Here’s what we found:

El Paso Area Teachers Federal Credit Union (www.tfcu.coop) offers top CD rates in four terms, all with a minimum deposit of $500. It pays 1.21% APY on 12-month CDs, 1.36% APY on 24-month CDs, 2.27% APY on 36-month CDs and 2.88% APY on 60-month CDs. Membership is limited to those who live or work in El Paso County, Texas, and requires a $25 deposit in a savings account.

GECU (www.gecu-ep.org) offers top 3- and 5-year CD rates with a $1,000 minimum deposit. It pays 2.07% APY on 36-month CDs and 2.68% APY on 60-month CDs. Membership in this credit union is open to anyone who lives or works in the Texas counties of El Paso or Doña Ana, but not more than 25 miles from the El Paso branch at 1500 N. Resler St.

Houston Police Federal Credit Union (www.hpfcu.org) offers several top short-term CD rates. Minimum deposits vary. It pays 1.06% APY on 6-month CDs, 1.24% APY on 12-month CDs, 1.44% APY on 15-month CDs and 1.27% APY on 24-month CDs. You or a family member must have ties to the Houston Police Department to be eligible to join this credit union.

Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union (www.rbfcu.org) offers three good long-term CD rates that increase as your deposit increases. It pays up to 2.18% APY on 60-month CDs, up to 2.27% APY on 72-month CDs and up to 2.68% APY on 84-month CDs. You must live or work in the Austin or San Antonio areas to be eligible to join this credit union.

Compare these returns with the best CD rates from scores of banks in our extensive database.
