Texas Deal On CD Rates Approaches 3%

GECU offers CDs with a $1,000 minimum deposit. It’s pretty hard to find CD rates near 3% today, but in some states like Texas, where there are numerous competitive deals, a few local offers come close.

Take El Paso-based GECU, which has offered rates well above what most institutions have offered throughout 2011.

That remains true today, and its best offer falls just one-tenth of a percentage point short of that now-magical 3% line.

With a $1,000 minimum deposit, it pays:

  • 1.35% APY on 24-month CDs.
  • 2.25% APY on 36-month CDs.
  • 2.90% APY on 60-month CDs.

It’s also paying 1.36% APY on 18-month CDs.

All of those rates beat the top nationally available deals on our CD Rates Leaderboard.

You must be a member of GECU ( to purchase these certificates of deposit.

Membership is open to anyone who lives or works in El Paso County or in Doña Ana County not more than 25 miles from the El Paso branch at 1500 N. Resler St.

To join, you must deposit at least $20 in a savings account.

Members can buy CDs over the phone or at one of GECU’s 10 branches in El Paso and Socorro.

Compare these returns with the best CD rates from scores of banks in our database.
