SunTrust: Big Bank With Decent CD Rates

Finally, a big bank with CD rates worthy of being called “special.”

Earn a top rate of 2.40%SunTrust, which has nearly 1,700 branches in seven southeastern states and Washington, D.C., has a “Two CDs Are Better Than One” CD package available to its checking account holders.

As the package title implies, you’re buying two certificates of deposit at once: a 39- and a 63-month CD, both at 2.40% APY.

A $2,000 minimum deposit is required, and your deposit amount is split 50/50 between the two CDs in the package.

The 39-month rate beats (yes, you read it right, beats) the top nationally available 36-month CD rate on our CD Rates Leaderboard, which is currently 2.17% APY.

The 63-month rate isn’t quite as good. It’s half of a percentage point less than that the 60-month leader, but it’s still pretty high for a big bank.

SunTrust’s rates are much better than the average rates large banks and thrifts offer for those terms, which are 1.04% APY for 36-month CDs and 1.71% APY for 60-month CDs.

A few of SunTrust’s other special CD rates, which also require a $2,000 minimum deposit, aren’t half bad either:

66-month CD rate is 2.70% APY

59-month CD rate is 2.25% APY.

37-month CD rate is 1.55% APY.

Be sure to compare SunTrust’s returns with the best CD rates from scores of other banks in our extensive database.

These rates are still available as of May 16, 2011, except for the 37-month rate, which has dipped to 1.50% APY.
