Some Banks Boost 3-Year CD Rates

Large percentage signWe’ve had a couple of rate increases from banks challenging the best 36-month CD offer, but none big enough to push to the top of our CD Rates Leaderboard.

Indeed, it’s now been nearly four months since the top 36-month offer has changed.

Intervest National Bank (, a community bank headquartered in New York City, with one branch there and six branches in Clearwater and Pinellas counties in Florida, pays 1.45% APY with a $2,500 minimum deposit.

Two banks now pay the second-highest rate of 1.35% APY:

AloStar Bank of Commerce (, which is an online bank based in Birmingham, Ala., continues to pay the second-best rate of 1.35% APY and requires a $1,000 minimum deposit.

Barclays (, which is the online American operation of the worldwide British bank with more than $2 trillion in assets, raised its 36-month CD rate in mid-January, along with its 24- and 36-month rates. It has no minimum balance requirement.

Three banks pay 1.30% APY:

GE Capital Bank (, which is one of two online banks, each with its own FDIC insurance, that are subsidiaries of GE Capital Corp., the financial services unit of the manufacturing giant. It requires a $500 minimum deposit.

GE Capital Retail Bank (, the other bank that’s a subsidiary of GE Capital Corp., requires a $25,000 minimum deposit.

The New York branch of the State Bank of India (, the FDIC-insured New York branch of India’s largest bank, which operates independently of other U.S. branches, requires a $5,000 minimum deposit. It also recently raised its rate.

CIT Bank (, the online consumer bank of CIT Group Inc., which offers financing to small businesses and middle-market companies, pays 1.27% APY and requires a $1,000 minimum deposit.

The FDIC-insured Chicago branch of State Bank of India (, which is also an independent U.S. branch of India’s largest bank, pays 1.26% APY and requires a $2,500 minimum deposit.

The average annual yield that large banks and thrifts are offering for 36-month CDs remains 0.49% for the sixth week.

These banks qualify for our rankings by imposing no restrictions on who can buy their certificates of deposit, either online or through the mail.
