Six Banks Now Offer Top 1-Year CD Rates

MetLife Bank is the new leader, but five other banks are right on its tail.
MetLife Bank is the new leader of our rankings of the best nationally available 12-month CD rates today.

But five other banks – all with lower minimum deposits – are right on its tail.

The online bank owned by the big insurance company that features Snoopy in its ads is paying 1.30% APY on 1-year CDs with a hefty $25,000 minimum deposit.

MetLife (www.metlifebank.com) took the lead after Nexity Bank lowered its 12-month CD rates from 1.31% APY to 1.27% APY.

But the difference in rates is so small we suspect many savers will continue to buy from Nexity (www.nexitybank.com) because the online bank based in Birmingham, Ala., only requires a $1,000 minimum deposit.

The next best return on 1-year CD rate is 1.26% APY from E-Loan (www.eloan.com), a subsidiary of Banco Popular North America. It requires a $10,000 minimum deposit.

Then comes three banks paying 1.21% APY:

  • Aurora Bank (www.aurorabankfsb.com), which has branches in Wilmington, Del., and Jersey City, N.J., and requires a $1,000 minimum deposit.
  • Bank of Internet USA (www.bankofinternet.com), an online bank based in San Diego that requires a $1,000 minimum deposit.
  • Virtual Bank (www.virtualbank.com), the online division of Lydian Private Bank, based in Palm Beach, Fla. It requires a $10,000 minimum deposit.

These banks qualify for our rankings by selling their certificates of deposits to savers nationwide through their websites or by mail.

Compare these returns with the best CD rates from scores of banks in our extensive database.
