Self-Help CU: Top 3-, 24-Month CD Rates

The credit union offers these deals with a $500 minimum deposit.Socially conscious savers can do good while taking advantage of decent CD rates through Self-Help Credit Union and Self-Help Federal Credit Union.

With a $500 minimum deposit, both are offering:

  • 1.01% APY for 3-month CDs.
  • 1.77% APY for 24-month CDs.

Those rates beat the top nationally available rates for their corresponding terms — the 3-month CD rate by two-tenths of a percentage point. (Check out our latest CD Rates Leaderboard).

Both credit unions are under the umbrella of and provide financing for the Center for Community Self-Help (www.self-help.org). The Durham, N.C.-based nonprofit is dedicated to providing economic opportunities for women, minorities, rural residents and low-income families and communities.

Standard, “green” and “women and children” specialty CDs are available. These specialty CDs allow you to focus your deposited funds toward an area of Self-Help’s mission.

Self-Help is also the founder of the Center for Responsible Lending, which is dedicated to changing flawed and abusive consumer lending practices.

So if you put your money in Self-Help, you aren’t just making an investment, you’re making a statement about the banking industry.

But why two credit unions?

Self-Help Credit Union is chartered only in North Carolina, while Self-Help Federal Credit Union is federally chartered.

While these certificates of deposit are only available to members, anyone can join either credit union by paying $20 to become a member of the Center for Community Self-Help.

And that can be done online, at the same time you buy a CD.

Or at a branch. The main office of the Center for Community Self-Help has a branch on first floor, at 301 W. Main St. in Durham, N.C.

Self-Help Credit Union has branches in North Carolina, but all are differently named divisions. See the website for more details.

The CD rates are the same at all of these North Carolina branches.

But they’re not necessarily the same at the California branches, which are currently legally but not operationally merged with Self-Help Federal Credit Union.

In Oakland, People’s Community Partnership Federal Credit Union has the same rates, but not Community Trust Credit Union, which has locations in East Palo Alto, Modesto, Riverbank, San Jose, Bakersfield, Lamont and Porterville.
