Rewards Checking Leader Locks Access

It’s getting harder to find good yields on nationally available rewards checking accounts now that Liberty National Bank of Lawton, Okla., has placed restrictions on who can apply.

Liberty National Bank now offers its rewards checking account only to Oklahoma and Texas residents.Liberty is the fifth bank in recent weeks to restrict new applicants or lock them out completely.

Coulee Bank of LaCrosse, Wis., now offers the top nationally available deal for rewards checking, but its rate of 3.03% APY is more than a percentage point below what Liberty National Bank offered.

Coulee Bank’s 3.03% APY is good on balances of up to $25,000. You earn 0.30% APY for any balances above $25,000.

Thanks to reader Evan, who commented on an earlier post that Liberty National now restricts new accounts to residents of Oklahoma and Texas.

The bank’s 4.11% APY on high-yield checking is still a great deal for those residents. But if you live in the other 48 states, you’re out of luck.

Outside of Coulee Bank, two other banks offer national deals above 3%. They are:

3.01% APY from Danversbank, with 30 branches in the Boston area. It’s good for balances up to $25,000.

3.01% APY from Atlantic Coast Bank of Waycross, Ga., which has 11 branches in southeast Georgia and northeast Florida. The offer is good for balances up to $15,000.

A third bank, Illinois-based Liberty Bank (not to be confused with Liberty National), also placed restrictions on its 3.01% APY rewards checking account. You must live in Illinois or Missouri to sign up for this account.

Three other long-time front-runners, Evantage Bank, AmericaNet Bank and Redneck Bank – three Oklahoma siblings – recently put “sold out” signs on their 3.75% APY high-yield checking account deals.
