Pack These Credit Cards Off To Campus

Here are three good credit cards for college students to take back to school this fall.

We chose them for all of the right reasons we suggest in the recent post What To Look For In A College Credit Card. What You Need In A College Credit Card

All of these cards have low interest rates, free online access to accounts and no annual fee.

Unfortunately the interest rates are variable, which means they’ll increase when the prime rate goes up. But fixed rates are almost impossible to find on a credit card aimed at college students right now.

The State Farm Student Visa is our favorite.

The interest rate on purchases and balance transfers will be 10.24% to 18.24% APR, depending on your credit worthiness. The cash advance rate (getting cash and charging it to your credit card) is 20.24% APR.

Citi Forward Card for College Students offers a 0% introductory rate on purchases for seven months and on balance transfers for 12 months.

After that, your rate will be 12.99%, 15.99%, 17.99% or 19.99%, depending on your credit. The cash advance rate is 25.24% APR.

This card’s “rate reduction” feature grabbed our attention. If you stay under your credit limit and make three consecutive on-time payments, your interest rate will be reduced by one-quarter of a percentage point, up to a 2% maximum.

The Discover Student Clear Card offers 0% interest on purchases for the first six months.

After the introductory period is over, your regular interest rate will range from 13.99% to 20.99%, depending on your credit worthiness.

The APR for cash advances is a steep 23.99% APR and you can’t transfer balances from another card to this account.

Before applying for any card, please read the “Terms and Conditions,” which are on all the applications. That’s where the details are spelled out.
