Odd-Term Specials Top Wells Fargo’s CDs

The most generous thing we can say about Wells Fargo’s CD rates is that its 58-month special is looking better and better.

Thanks to falling returns across the country, the 1.15% APY Wells Fargo has paid since last fall (with a $5,000 minimum deposit) is now above average.

Yeah, it’s only three-hundredths of a percentage point above average.

The average annual yield for 60-month CDs has fallen to 1.12%, a record low for 5-year certificates of deposit.

And it’s nowhere near the 1.81% APY you can earn from the best nationally available 60-month CD on our CD Rates Leaderboard.

But if you bank at Wells and want to buy a certificate of deposit there because it’s convenient, this is as good as it gets.

Unfortunately, Well Fargo’s CD specials aren’t available everywhere, but I found the 1.15% interest rate in Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami and New York City.

The only way to make sure it’s available where you live is to go to the Wells Fargo website (www.wellsfargo.com) and enter your ZIP code.

You’ll probably find other odd-term specials available to you as well, although we can’t say exactly what those are. Wells Fargo is famous for offering odd-term specials paying a variety of rates in various geographic areas across the country.

You’ll also find standard CD terms (such as 6-, 12-, 24- and 60-month CDs), but those rates are too poor to bother with.

Really, our advice is to head to the CD Rates Leaderboard or check out our listing of the highest CD rates we’ve found at local banks and credit unions.

Some are available nationally, thanks to credit unions with liberal membership requirements.

There are definitely better deals out there, and you’ll find them if you compare Wells Fargo’s returns with the best CD rates from scores of other banks in our extensive database.

No way would I take the Wells Fargo offer. Look around, folks. Sure, it’s a little work and time consuming but at our local credit union yesterday I opened a 5yr CD at 2.07% yield. The next best was 1.80% at a local bank.

Wells Fargo’s 58-month special rate is still available, depending on where you live.
