Northeast Deal: Long-Term CDs Pay Big

Workers' Credit Union offers its best CD rates to checking account customers.Workers’ Credit Union has 54-month CD rates for its 67,000 Massachusetts members that are fine without a checking account but, as is not uncommon, better with one.

It pays:

  • 2.15% APY with a $500 minimum deposit and an active checking account with direct deposit.
  • 1.90% APY with just a $500 minimum deposit (no checking account required).

Workers’ also has a 72-month CD special that pays 2.50% APY with a $500 minimum deposit.

While we don’t love relationship rates, this one beats the top nationally available 60-month CD rate on our CD Rates Leaderboard by nearly a quarter of a percentage point.

Workers’ offers several different checking accounts, including its free rewards checking account — Xtreme Checking — which pays 2.00% APY on balances up to $25,000.

You must make 12 debit card purchases, sign up for electronic statements and have at least one direct deposit a month to qualify for the top rate.

To purchase these certificates of deposit (and sign up for a checking account), you must be a member of Workers’ Credit Union. Membership is open to anyone who lives and works in Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire or works for a company that is based in Massachusetts.

Membership in Workers’ Credit Union requires a $25 deposit into a savings account.

Members can buy CDs online or at one of the credit union’s 14 branches, which are located in Acton, Chelmsford, Gardner, Groton, Fitchburg, Lancaster, Leominster, Lunenburg, North Chelmsford, Orange and Townsend.
