The State Employees’ Credit Union in North Carolina is offering money market account rates to its 1.6 million members that beat the top nationally available deal.
The account offered by the Raleigh, N.C.-based credit union has a rate of 1.26% APY, just a touch above the best national rate of 1.25% APY offered by AmTrust Direct, the online division of AmTrust Bank of Cleveland.
AmTrust holds the top nationally available rate after Evantage Bank, the online division of Southwest State Bank in Sentinel, Okla., stopped taking applications for its 1.75% APY Mega Money Market Account.
The State Employees’ Credit Union offer requires $250 to open a money market share account. There are no monthly fees unless your balance falls below the initial $250.
It’s quite a contrast to the AmTrust deal, which applies to balances of $10,000 to $149,999. A balance above or below those limits earns 0.50% APY.
You need a minimum $500 deposit to open the account.
Credit union membership is open to a wide range of government personnel, including employees of the state of North Carolina and federal employees working in conjunction with state departments.
