No Wrong Move On CDs At USAA

The diversified financial company based in San Antonio offers above-average CD rates. You might have noticed USAA Federal Savings Bank in our weekly roundups of the best nationally available CD rates.

This bank, owned by the diversified financial company that caters to members of the U.S. military, often offers CD rates strong enough to be included on our list, although it’s never landed in the lead spot for any term.

(It did have the second-best 60-month CD rate once, way back in September 2010.)

Still, USAA’s CD rates are almost always better than the majority of the big banks we review.

Actually, make that way better.

So, if you’re a customer of this bank, though you could do slightly better, you shouldn’t feel guilty about purchasing certificates of deposit here.

For 36-month CDs, the San Antonio-based company pays 1.31% APY with a $1,000 minimum deposit.

That’s only about a tenth of a percentage point less than that term’s lead rate of 1.42% APY on our CD Rates Leaderboard.

And it’s a heck of a lot better than the average annual yield of 0.62% that large banks and thrifts pay for 36-month CDs.

At 1.66% APY, USAA’s 60-month CD rate is a fifth of a percentage point less than its term’s leader but well above the average annual yield of 1.03%.

USAA’s other current CD rates for savers nationally:

3-month CD rate is 0.35% APY versus an average rate of 0.13% APY. (Leaderboard leader is 0.66% APY.)

6-month CD rate is 0.61% APY versus an average rate of 0.20% APY. (Leaderboard leader is 0.93% APY.)

12-month CD rate is 0.86% APY versus an average rate of 0.31% APY. (Leaderboard leader is 1.10% APY.)

24-month CD rate is 1.10% APY versus an average rate of 0.48% APY. (Leaderboard leader is 1.25% APY.)
