New York CD Deal: Earn At Least 2.35%

AmeriCU Credit Union offers bonus relationship rates.Plenty of banks and credit unions offer interest rate bonuses for savers who have a continuing relationship with the institution.

But few take it as far as AmeriCU Credit Union, which hands out CD rate bonuses of up to half of a percentage point.

Even without the bonus, this upstate New York’s top 60-month CD looks great in today’s low-rate environment.

With a $500 minimum deposit, it pays 2.35% APY.

That’s more than half of a percentage point better than the top nationally available deal on our CD Rates Leaderboard.

But you can increase your rate by 0.10%, 0.25% or 0.50% based on your aggregate account balance at the credit union. AmeriCU doesn’t make it easy to track down what qualifications you need to meet to earn the rate bonus, so I’ve linked to its relationship program page.

In short, you need to have at least $250,000 in accounts, credit cards, mortgages or investments with this credit union to earn the top rate — 2.86% APY.

Unless you’re really committed, there’s no reason to stretch to reach this relationship level. The no-strings-attached 2.35% APY is plenty good in this rate environment.

And AmeriCU offers some other top CD rates, too. All you’ll need is a $500 minimum deposit.

It pays:

  • 1.35% APY on 24-month CDs.
  • 1.87% APY on 36-month CDs.
  • 2.12% APY on 48-month CDs.

You must be a member of this credit union to purchase certificates of deposit. Membership is limited to people who live, work, worship or attend school in the New York counties of Cayuga, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga and Oswego.

You can also qualify if you’re a relative or live with an existing member or qualified nonmember.

You can open accounts online or in person at one of AmeriCU Credit Union’s branches in Auburn, Cicero, Fort Drum, Herkimer, Liverpool, Lowville, Oneida, Rome, Syracuse, Utica, Watertown or Yorkville.
