National Deal: Top CD Rates In Virginia

Anyone can join State Department Federal Credit Union.State Department Federal Credit Union offers top CD rates in several terms and makes it easy for anyone to join.

With a $500 minimum deposit, it pays:

  • 1.56% APY on 36-month CDs.
  • 1.96% APY on 48-month CDs.
  • 2.27% APY on 60-month CDs.

All of those yields beat their nearest terms on our CD Rates Leaderboard, but the best deal is on 5-year CDs, which pay about a third of a percentage point more than the top nationally available bank deal.

State Department FCU also pays 1.26% APY on its 24-month CD, which ties our term leader.

As the name suggests, State Department FCU was originally chartered by employees of the Department of State. But you don’t have to work for the government or live near its Alexandria, Va., headquarters to join.

This credit union is open to savers in all 50 states.

Of course, Department of State employees and members of various organizations qualify, but if you don’t belong to one of the groups listed on the credit union’s website (www.sdfcu.org), you can gain eligibility by joining the nonprofit advocacy group the American Consumer Council.

According to the credit union: “When opening your SDFCU account, you will need to choose ACC on your application; this will automatically enroll you as a member of ACC. There are no hidden fees to join ACC through your membership at SDFCU.”

Both the account and certificates of deposit can be opened online. To join, you must open a share savings account, although the credit union says it will fund the minimum $1 deposit.

State Department FCU has branches in Washington, D.C., and Alexandria and Arlington, Va. Visit the website or call 800-296-8882 for more information.
