Joking Around Over Consumer Protection

Funny or Die's "Presidential Reunion"

The actors who’ve portrayed presidents on “Saturday Night Live” over the past 35 years have come together for a good but unusual cause — creating a federal Consumer Protection Agency.

Their video, “Presidential Reunion,” is directed by Ron Howard and posted on actor Will Ferrell’s Web site, Funny or Die.

Barack (Fred Armisen) and Michele Obama (Maya Rudolph) are visited one night by past presidents George W. Bush (Ferrell), Bill Clinton (Darrell Hammond), George H.W. Bush (Dana Carvey), Jimmy Carter (Dan Aykroyd), and Gerald Ford (Chevy Chase).

The only non-SNL star in the video is Jim Carey as Ronald Reagan. (Phil Hartman, who played Reagan on the show, was killed by his wife in 1998.)

The idea is kind of clever: All of these former presidents want Obama to create a Consumer Protection Agency to make up for all of the bad, anti-consumer policies they pursued.

But while it’s a hoot to see these guys again (even with the extra few pounds), the message gets a little lost in all of the nostalgia and star power.

Howard actually makes a more coherent argument for the agency in a second Funny or Die video made with “I had 10 plastic surgeries at once” reality television star Heidi Montag.

I thought this video was great, it was great to see so many familiar faces in one place. I could tell a professional did it (Ron Howard) I shared this on facebook with friends.
