Iowa Remains A Hot State For CD Rates

Numerous banks and credit unions offer CD deals better than what's available nationally.Iowa has been a competitive state for some time when it comes to CD rates.

In fact, there were so many banks and credit unions offering such great deals that beat the best nationally available CD rates that we placed a temporary ban on posts regarding the great state of Iowa.

That was more than a year ago. We’ve done a few posts since then, but in general we’ve avoided the Hawkeye State.

And you know what? CD rates are still very competitive.

So we decided to do a roundup (this isn’t all-inclusive, so if you see something better, give us a shout) of the best CD rates in Iowa. These all beat what’s available in the nearest term on our CD Rates Leaderboard.

Here’s what we found :

Ames Community Bank (www.amesbank.com) has a good special on CD rates. With a $1,000 minimum deposit, it pays 1.25% APY on its 17-month special. You must be an Iowa resident and buy these CDs at one of its offices in Ames or at one of the banks it owns in Boone (Community Bank of Boone), Grimes (VisionBank), Huxley (Ballard Community Bank) and Ogden (City State Bank).

City State Bank (www.csb4me.com) has top CD rates on its bump-up certificates of deposit, which allow you to raise your rate (should it increase) once during the term. With a $500 minimum deposit, it pays 1.50% APY on special 21-month CDs, 1.80% APY on special 35-month CDs and 2.05% on either special 49-month or regular-term 60-month CDs. You must be an Iowa resident to purchase these CDs, and you must buy them in person at one of the bank’s two locations outside of Cedar Rapids, in Central City and Marion.

Dupaco Community Credit Union (www.dupaco.com), which we wrote about earlier this month, offers several competitive CD rates. With a $1,000 minimum deposit, it pays 1.71% APY on its 35-month special and 2.21% APY on its 60-month CD. Membership is open to anyone who lives or works in its charter area in northwest Illinois, northern Iowa and southwest Wisconsin.

Green Belt Bank & Trust (www.greenbeltbank.com) has top 3- and 5-year CDs. With a $500 minimum deposit, it pays 1.60% APY on 36-month CDs and 2.10% APY on 60-month CDs. These CDs must be bought in person at one of Green Belt’s branches in Iowa Falls, Ackley, Grundy Center and Eldora.

University of Iowa Community Credit Union (www.uiccu.org) has both regular-term and special CDs that top the best nationally available deals. With minimum deposits that range between $500 and $1,000, it pays 1.50% APY on its 22-month special, 2.00% APY on its 35-month special and 2.15% APY on its long-term CD, which ranges from 49 to 60 months. University of Iowa students and alumni qualify for membership in this credit union as well as anyone living or working in 36 eastern Iowa counties.

Veridian Credit Union (www.veridiancu.org) has numerous CDs — both regular-term and special — that offer very competitive rates. With a $1,000 minimum deposit, it pays 1.25% APY on 15-month CDs, 1.30% APY on 18- to 24-month CDs, 1.60% APY on 25-month CDs, 1.90% APY on 39 month CDs and 2.15% APY on 49- to 60-month CDs. It also offers a 30-month bump-up CD that pays 1.75% APY. Membership is available to those who live or work in one of 35 Iowa counties as well as employees of one of the credit union’s many business partners and their family members.

UICCU provides a Best Rate Guarantee on CDs if you have their checking account (currently yielding 3.25%). So if anyone else in the market is beating them, they will offer a better yield on a comparable term.

Most of these rates are still available. Ames still offers a 1.25% APY CD, but the term is now 18 months. City State’s 2.05% 60-month rate is now a bump-up CD instead of a regular CD. And Veridian has lowered its 25-month rate (1.50%), 30-month bump-up rate (1.65%) and 39-month rate (1.80).
