ING Direct Holds ‘Independence’ Sale

Online bank is offering a checking account bonusING Direct is offering a deal to people who sign up for its checking account during the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Sign up today or Saturday for an Electric Orange checking account and you’ll get the usual $50 cash bonus plus an extra $76.

Get it? For Independence Day?

So that’s $126 just for signing up during its Financial Independence Days sale at

You won’t get the bonus right away though.

To get the first $50, you must make three purchases with the Electric Orange Card or Person2Person Payments (a direct transfer into another bank account) within the first 45 days.

You’ll get your money Aug. 21.

To get the extra $76, you’ll need to set up direct deposit and have at least two direct deposits of $250 hit your account by Aug. 31. You’ll get that money on Sept. 8.

This isn’t an earth-shattering promotion, and the account’s interest rate is pretty weak — 0.25% on balances of less than $50,000.

But interest rates on regular checking accounts are not great anywhere, and, well the $126 bonus is something.

ING still has no overdraft fees, and no monthly fees.

There are other offers as part of the ING Direct sale, including a break on mortgage closing costs and referral bonuses. Again, nothing spectacular, and no CD rates deal either.

We’re still not sure what’s going to change now that Capital One has agreed to buy ING Direct.

But so far?

Looks like ING’s offering the same products with fun, quirky bonuses.
