Huntington’s Best? Try Blended-Rate CDs

It pays 1.50% on a 48-month CD.Huntington National Bank offers an array of CD products — but its atypical offerings have the best CD rates.

Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, Huntington (www.huntington.com) has more than 600 branches in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Huntington’s best offering is its 48-month stepped-rate CD paying 1.50% APY with a $1,000 minimum deposit.

This is essentially a blended CD, where Huntington combines four different annual percentage yields over the course of the term.

In this case, the actual APY is 0.75% for the first year, 1.00% for the second year, 2.05% for the third year, and 2.15% for the fourth year.

If you withdraw your funds early, you won’t get the full benefit of the blend — and you’ll pay a penalty, too.

This blended rate beats out the average 36- and 60-month CDs. The average annual yield offered by large banks and thrifts for 60-month CDs is currently 1.38%; for 36-month CDs, 0.82%.

You can view CD rates online, but you must call or visit a branch to complete your application. Rates may differ based on where you live, but the rates online reflect what’s available in Columbus.

While CD rates are available nationwide, funding them is even more complicated for savers who don’t live in the bank’s footprint. It’s just not worth the hassle.

In addition to the 48-month rate, Huntington also offers a 24-month stepped-rate CD paying 0.80% APY.

The average annual yield for that term is currently 0.61%, so it’s not as great of a deal.

Huntington’s easy access CD is for 12 months at 0.50% APY, which beats its average rate by a tenth of a percentage point, but requires a $15,000 minimum deposit.

Not a single one of Huntington’s standard term CDs beats the current average rates.

That’s pretty sad, considering those average rates have been setting new record lows each week.

Of course, you can always find the top nationally available CD rates on the CD Rates Leaderboard.

There are definitely better deals out there, and you’ll find them if you compare Huntington Bank’s returns with the best CD rates from scores of other banks in our extensive database.
