HSBC Offers Just One Average CD Rate

The CD rates at this bank with more than 470 U.S. branches are not good. It’s been a year since I reviewed the CD rates at HSBC Bank.

Nothing’s changed.

The rates continue to be really poor at this international bank with more than 470 U.S. branches on the East and West coasts and in Illinois.

How bad are they?

Check out HSBC Bank’s current standard-term online CDs, which require a $1,000 minimum deposit:

3-month CD rate is 0.15% APY versus, which ties the average rate of 0.15% APY. (Leaderboard leader is 0.65% APY.)

6-month CD rate is 0.15% APY versus an average rate of 0.22% APY. (Leaderboard leader is 0.85% APY.)

12-month CD rate is 0.20% APY versus an average rate of 0.33% APY. (Leaderboard leader is 1.15% APY.)

24-month CD rate is 0.35% APY versus an average rate of 0.52% APY. (Leaderboard leader is 1.26% APY.)

HSBC Bank has a separate set of rates for certificates of deposit purchased over the phone.

Those are no better (worse, actually), although there is a 48-month to 10-year-less-a-day option available that pays 0.60% APY.

No, thanks.

HSBC Bank doesn’t offer different rates based on where you live or whether you have a relationship with the bank, like a checking account.

Still, you’d be much better off checking out the top nationally available rates on the CD Rates Leaderboard.

HSBC is no longer offering a 3-month online CD, and its 6-month online CD now pays 0.10% APY.
