Highest CD Rates: Charting The Best Deals At Credit Unions And Community Banks

Many of the best deals on certificates of deposit are offered by credit unions and community banks.

Indeed, the returns in these charts match or beat what you’ll find on our CD Rates Leaderboard, which ranks the best nationally available yields at banks around the county.

Many community banks don’t qualify for those rankings because they only accept deposits from savers who live within a defined service area. Some require savers to visit a branch to open an account. Although our charts indicate the states where those banks operate, CD sales may be limited to only portions of those states.

We don’t include credit unions on our Leaderboard because they also limit membership, and the right to buy CDs, by geography and employment.

Some credit unions allow savers across the country to qualify for membership by paying a modest fee or donation to join an affiliated charitable organization. The deals where that option exists are labeled as “Nationwide” on our charts.

You’ll also find on these charts nationally available “odd-term” CDs from banks and credit unions that aren’t the standard 6-months, 1-, 2-, 3- and 5-year CDs tracked by our Leaderboard.
