Highest CD Rates Roundup For Oct. 5

Bringing you the very best CD rates from credit unions and local banks. Here’s some good news: The best nationally available CD rates are holding steady.

The last rate change on our CD Rates Leaderboard came on Sept. 14, when the top 3-month CD declined by one-one hundredth of a percentage point.

And the top 5-year bank CD rate has remained unchanged since Aug. 22.

As for nationally available credit union CDs, the last major cut there came during the first week of September.

So far, the Fed’s announcement that it would hold short-term interest rates low through the middle of 2015 at the earliest has had no impact on the best certificates of deposit.

What was true a month ago is true now: The best nationally available CDs pay about 2%; if you’re lucky, you can find a local deal that pays a bit more.

This week, we added two deals to our list of the top credit union and local bank certificates:

  • Actors Federal Credit Union (www.actorsfcu.com) pays 2% APY on 60-month CDs with a $500 minimum deposit. Credit union membership is open to members and immediate family members of 151 member organizations, including the Actors’ Equity Association, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, the American Guild of Musical Artists and various industry unions. The extensive list is on the website.
  • Knoxville TVA Employees Credit Union (www.tvacreditunion.com) pays 1.60% APY on 34-month CDs with a $5,000 minimum deposit. Credit union membership is open to Tennessee residents in Johnson City or the counties of Blount, Jefferson, Loudon, Sevier, Hamblen, Knox, Roane and Sullivan.

We dropped two credit unions from our list: Hughes Federal Credit Union in Arizona, which no longer offers its special 29-month anniversary CD, and Florida State Employees Federal Credit Union, which also ended its 12-month special.

We saw rate cuts at Hiway Federal Credit Union in Minnesota, Houston Police Federal Credit Union and Via Credit Union in Indiana. All of those deals remain on our list, though.

You’ll find all the top-paying deals clearly marked on our highest CD rates page, showing where they are available, with a quick link back to the original post, which includes more information on the institution and its requirements.

We’ll update this page weekly, so you’ll always know what great deals are out there from credit unions and local banks.
