Florida Deal: Free Checking Pays 1%

Priority One Credit Union requires direct deposit to receive this rate.South Florida residents can open a free checking account that pays a rate surpassing most of the best nationally available savings and money market account rates.

At Priority One Credit Union of Florida (, based in Sunrise, the Go Green Checking Account pays 1.00% APY on balances up to $25,000 if you simply sign up for eStatements and have a direct deposit of at least $150 made into your account each month.

Unlike a rewards checking account, you don’t need to make a certain number of debit card transactions each month to earn a decent rate. (The top nationally available rewards checking account pays 4.09% APY on balances of up to $10,000.)

Before you can open your Go Green account, you need to open a Sharing Savings Account, which will cost you $5. Then you can open the checking account, which has no minimum balance requirement.

Membership is open to anyone who lives or works in Broward County, Fla., as well as U.S. Postal Service employees, federal employees, and members of certain other groups and associations who reside in Florida.

You can’t apply for an account online, but you can print out an application and mail it in.

Or you can stop by one of the three Priority One locations in Coral Springs, Ft. Lauderdale and Sunrise.
