Find Above-Average CD Rates At SunTrust

It pays 2.00% APY on its 72-month CD.We’ve been a little cranky about the below-average CD rates big banks have been featuring — heck, even bragging about.

So it’s refreshing to actually find one with above-average rates.

Thanks, SunTrust.

This big bank with 1,658 branches has a slew of above-average odd-term CD rates.

They vary some by state — not uncommon among bigger banks — so I searched the ZIP codes of large cities in the states SunTrust predominately operates in: Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, D.C.

One rate spotlighted across the board is 1.01% APY for 37-month CDs with a $2,000 minimum deposit.

Sure, that’s more than half of a percentage point shy of the top nationally available 36-month CD rate on our CD Rates Leaderboard.

But it easily beats the 0.69% APY average annual yield that large banks and thrifts are offering this week.

That rate does require a new or existing SunTrust checking account, as does the 72-month rate of 2.00% APY, which I found only in Florida – specifically Orlando.

The other odd-term CD rates that SunTrust offers are all above average:

59-month CD rate, which ranges from 1.30% APY to 1.50% APY versus an average rate of 1.13% APY for 60-month CDs. (Leaderboard leader is 1.91% APY.)

25-month CD rate is 0.65% APY versus an average rate of 0.52% APY for 24-month CDs. (Leaderboard leader is 1.20% APY.)

15-month CD rate, which ranges from 0.35% APY to 0.45% APY versus an average rate of 0.33% APY for 12-month CDs. (Leaderboard leader is 1.15% APY.)

9-month CD rate is 0.25% APY versus an average rate of 0.22% APY for 6-month CDs. (Leaderboard leader is 0.81% APY.)

All require a $2,000 minimum deposit.

These rates are still available, depending on where you live.
