Eat for free at KFC

The fast-food chain is teaming up with America’s favorite serial-dieting talk show host to promote its new Kentucky Grilled Chicken.

The result is the hottest coupon to hit the Web in months: “The Oprah Winfrey Show” free chicken dinner.

Kentucky Grilled ChickenDownload this KFC coupon and you can get a free dinner — 2 pieces of the grilled chicken and two sides.

The new grilled fowl has just 70 to 180 calories and four to nine grams of fat per piece, which is a lot less than the 130 to 360 calories and eight to 24 grams of fat you’ll find in KFC’s original recipe.

We can only hope this is more successful than KFC’s last foray into healthier eating, the Rotisserie Gold chicken that was tried back in the early ’90s and was supposedly from a “lost” Col. Sanders recipe.

You can print up to four coupons, and it’s good through May 19 with the exception of Mother’s Day (which is May 10.)

But hurry, the coupon can only be downloaded through 9:59 P.M. CDT on Wednesday, May 6.

Yeah, a lot of people weren’t allowed to print more than 2-3 for whatever reason; some couldn’t print any at all. Now you have to take your coupon in to a KFC branch and fill out a form for them to mail you a raincheck on it.They won’t accept the coupon anymore, just the raincheck that will eventually by mailed to you. I tried the chicken before they stopped taking coupons- it was pretty nasty, not to mention full of antibiotics and all kinds of other junk. But the mac and cheese+cole slaw and biscuit (yes it comes with a biscuit too bankaholic), were pretty good.

Leave it to Yum! restaurants to screw up the launch of it’s grilled chicken — and drag Oprah into the mess. According to what’s posted on Oprah’s web site, too many people showed up with the coupons. And no one at Yum! thought about this? When you go in you get a form to fill out and send in for another coupon. Couldn’t KFC have simply extended the time for the original coupons to be redeemed? The form is signed by “Roger Eaton, KFC President,” but of course he isn’t the one facing all the angry customers. He has lots of minimum-wage workers to do that for him. The guy should be fired. Here’s what’s on Oprah’s Web site today:

We are so sorry, but due to the overwhelming response to our FREE Kentucky Grilled Chicken meal coupon, we can no longer redeem the free coupon at this time. But we will honor our commitment to giving you a free Kentucky Grilled Chicken meal. Please visit a participating KFC restaurant for a rain check form. Complete the form, attach your original coupon, and give it to the KFC restaurant manager or postmark per the form’s instructions, by May 19, 2009, and we’ll send you a rain check for your free Kentucky Grilled Chicken meal at a later date, plus a free Pepsi with our compliments. Your participating KFC restaurant will provide you with the form you need. Please note that the redemption periods of the rain checks will vary. All other terms and conditions of the original free Kentucky Grilled Chicken coupon will apply. Thank you for your understanding,

    Roger Eaton
    KFC President
