Doral Bank Keeps Hold On 3-Year CD Rates

It's offered a 1.65% APY 36-month CD rate since August.Doral Bank Direct last changed its 36-month CD rates on Aug. 18.

Since then, banks that have ranked near the top of the term have cut their rates 27 times.

Some of these cuts pushed Doral to the top of our CD Rates Leaderboard, where it has remained (for all but four days) since the beginning of October.

Doral Bank Direct ( pays 1.65% APY with a $1,000 minimum deposit.

Doral Bank Direct is the online bank of Doral Bank, the leading community bank in Puerto Rico, which also has five branches in northwest Florida and two in New York City. It requires a $1,000 minimum deposit.

Two banks pay the second-best 36-month CD rate of 1.55% APY:

AmTrust Direct (, the online division of Cleveland-based AmTrust Bank, a division of New York Community Bank, which requires a $1,000 minimum deposit.

Quaint Oak Bank (, a suburban Philadelphia bank with one location, which requires a $500 minimum deposit.

The third-best rate is owned by CIT Bank (, the online consumer bank of CIT Group Inc., which offers financing to small businesses and middle-market companies. It’s paying 1.54% APY with a $1,000 deposit.

A slew of banks offer 1.50% APY:

Country Bank (, which has 14 branches in central Massachusetts and requires a $500 minimum deposit.

Goldwater Bank (, which has a single location in Scottsdale, Ariz., and requires a $5,000 minimum deposit.

Hudson City Savings Bank (, which has 130 branches in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut. It requires a $500 minimum deposit for anyone living in that tri-state area but a $5,000 minimum deposit for everyone else.

MainStreet Bank (, which has four branches in northern Virginia and serves customers nationally through its Airbanking website. It requires a $500 minimum deposit.

Nationwide Bank (, an online bank owned by Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company and its affiliates. It has no minimum deposit.

Tennessee Commerce Bank (, which has a single location in Franklin, Tenn., and requires a $2,500 minimum deposit.

Large banks and thrifts are currently offering an average annual yield of 0.68% APY for 36-month CDs.

    These 36-month rates are still available except for Quaint Oak’s, which has dropped to 1.50% APY, and MainStreet Bank’s, which is now 1.25% APY.

    Many of these rates are still available, but several banks are paying less now:
    Quaint Oak: 1.50% APY.
    Goldwater: 1.49%.
    Hudson City: 1.40%.
    MainStreet: 1.25%.
