Discover Card Helps Fill Your Gas Tank

Discover Open Road credit card offers $50 cash backIf high gas prices keep you home this holiday weekend, take comfort that what you pay at the pump is expected to fall.

But lower prices probably won’t last.

Insure yourself — at least a bit — with a gas rewards card, specifically, the Discover Open Road card.

We reviewed an earlier offer for this card that included a rebate in the form of a Restaurant.com gift certificate. This new offer gives $50 cash back for consumers who fill up at the pump.

The reward is provided in $10 increments. After you’ve made five fill-ups during the first 90 days, the reward will have been paid in full.

The Discover Open Road card features a solid rewards program focused specifically on gasoline and restaurants.

All cardholders earn 2% cash back in these two categories, with no limits or tier levels. You’ll earn 1% cash back on all other purchases after spending $3,000 annually; otherwise the cash back level is just 0.25%.

A 0% introductory APR on purchases and balance transfers for 12 months makes the Discover Open Road card even more attractive. The standard APR is 11.99% to 20.99% variable (prime rate plus 8.74% to 17.74%) depending on credit history.

If you do transfer a balance, you must do so before July 20. The balance transfer fee is 4%.

There are a few other gasoline credit cards that offer better than 1% cash back, like the True Earnings Costco Card from American Express and the PenFed Visa Platinum Card.

But neither of those cards includes a cash bonus for signing up and a 0% introductory offer.

Let’s see, 2% back on $3.75/gallon is $0.075/gallon. Gas stations around here charge $0.10-$0.12/gallon more to use a credit card so this is hardly worthwhile. Especially considering my FIA Card Services VISA and AMEX cards give me 2% across the board. For gasoline, I’ll continue to pay cash.

Add 15 cents per gallon to your discount by using speed pass until 6/30/11 (100 gal limit)
