Digital FCU Offers Top 5-Year CD Rates

It's relationship rate pays 2.5% APY.The top CD rates at Digital Federal Credit Union are saved for its checking account holders.

That relationship is worth a quarter of a percentage point bonus, boosting the 60-month CD at this Massachusetts-based credit union to 2.50% APY.

Members without a checking account earn 2.25% APY, which isn’t too shabby either.

The average rate large banks and thrifts offer for 60-month CDs is 1.17%.

And the top 60-month CD rate on our CD Rates Leaderboard has fallen to 1.95% APY, with two banks offering the deal.

Digital Federal Credit Union (www.dcu.org) requires a $500 minimum deposit, but that’s decreased to $100 for members under the age of 23.

Most of the credit union’s other rates, which also include the 0.25% relationship bonus, aren’t as good:

3- to 5-month CD rate is 0.50% APY versus an average rate of 0.15% APY for 3-month CDs. (Leaderboard leader is 0.60% APY.)

6- to 11-month CD rate is 0.84% APY versus an average rate of 0.22% APY for 6-month CDs. (Leaderboard leader is 0.85% APY.)

12- to 23-month CD rate is 1.00% APY versus an average rate of 0.34% APY for 12-month CDs. (Leaderboard leader is 1.15% APY.)

24- to 35-month CD rate is 1.10% APY versus an average rate of 0.53% APY for 24-month CDs. (Leaderboard leader is 1.30% APY.)

36- to 47-month CD rate is 1.50% APY versus an average rate of 0.68% APY for 36-month CDs. (Leaderboard leader is 1.65% APY.)

48- to 59-month CD rate is 2.00% APY.

You can add to your deposit on CDs of 12 months or less at anytime during the term, as long as the amount is at least $100.

Digital Federal Credit Union also has “jump-up” certificates for 15- and 27-month terms, which allow you to raise the rate once during the term and a second time if you renew.

With a $500 minimum deposit, and the 0.25% relationship bonus, those pay:

  • 1.05% APY for 15-month CDs.
  • 1.25% APY for 27-month CDs.

Digital Federal Credit Union has more than 340,000 members.

Anyone can join by becoming a member of one of the credit union’s participating organizations.

The organizations are listed on the website and categorized by the cost of dues or membership. The range is $10 to $120. You’ll want to make sure how much you spend doesn’t subtract too much from what you’ll earn on a CD.

There are ways to join the credit union without joining another organization.

You can join if you are a relative of a current member or if you live, work, worship or attend school in select Georgia and Massachusetts communities, specifically Cumming, Gainesville and Norcross, in Georgia; and in Massachusetts, Lowell and Worcester, and portions of Chelmsford and Tewksbury.

You can also join if the company you work for or are retired from is one of Digital Federal Credit Union’s participating employers. That extensive list can be found on the website.

To join, you must deposit $5 deposit in a share account.

Members can buy CDs online, over the phone or in person at one of Digital Federal Credit Union’s 14 branches in Massachusetts or four branches in New Hampshire.
