Citi’s Only Average Rate: 3-Month CDs

Although it claims to have highly competitive CD rates, that's only true if you consider competitive to mean below average. When it comes to Citi’s CD rates, I’m starting to sound like a broken record.

Last summer, I complained about being the bearer of bad rates where Citi was concerned.

I’ve continued that lament in all of the seasons since.

The New York City-based big bank with more than 1,000 branches is really no friend to savers.

But to be fair, is any big bank these days? Scroll back a few weeks, and you’ll find little good news from this set.

Citi no longer has a single CD rate above average. (Its 3-month CDs pay the average rate.)

Considering that five of six terms we track have record-low average annual yields right now, that’s just sad.

Sad for Citi, and sad for savers.

Citi can vary its CD rates by the 16 regions it divides the United States into, so you should type in your ZIP code on the website.

Most states fall into its “national region.” With a minimum deposit of $500, Citi’s current CD rates for those savers are:

3-month CD rate is 0.15% APY, which matches the average rate. (Our Leaderboard leader is 0.66% APY.)

6-month CD rate is 0.15% APY versus an average rate of 0.21% APY. (Leaderboard leader is 0.90% APY.)

12-month CD rate is 0.25% APY versus an average rate of 0.32% APY. (Leaderboard leader is 1.15% APY.)

24-month CD rate is 0.30% APY versus an average rate of 0.51% APY. (Leaderboard leader is 1.25% APY.)

36-month CD rate is 0.50% APY versus an average rate of 0.68% APY. (Leaderboard leader is 1.55% APY.)

60-month CD rate is 1.01% APY versus an average rate of 1.11% APY. (Leaderboard leader is 1.91% APY.)

Nothing’s changed — the rates are all the same today.
