Citi’s CD Rates Are No Worse Than Before

Although it claims to have highly competitive CD rates, that's only true if you consider competitive to mean average. But CD rates at Citi still aren’t anything to jump up and down about, unfortunately.

Sure, they’re steady at this New York-based big bank with more than 1,000 branches, but every rate except one is south of average.

And that single exception — 0.15% APY for 3-month certificates of deposit — only matches the average annual yield large banks and thrifts are currently offering.

And we thought the top nationally available 3-month CD rate on our CD Rates Leaderboard — 0.60% APY — was low.

At least its rates haven’t dropped in the two months since we last took a look.

As is the case with most big banks, Citi’s CD rates may differ by region. Citi divides the United States into 15 regions, with most states falling into its “national region.” You can easily look up your state on the website,

I found no variance among the sampling of regions I searched.

A quick recap of Citi’s standard-term CD rates with a minimum deposit of $500:

6-month CD rate is 0.15% APY versus an average rate of 0.22% APY. (Leaderboard leader is 0.85% APY.)

12-month CD rate is 0.25% APY versus an average rate of 0.34% APY. (Leaderboard leader is 1.15% APY.)

24-month CD rate is 0.30% APY versus an average rate of 0.53% APY. (Leaderboard leader is 1.30% APY.)

36-month CD rate is 0.50% APY versus an average rate of 0.68% APY. (Leaderboard leader is 1.65% APY.)

60-month CD rate is 1.01% APY versus an average rate of 1.17% APY. (Leaderboard leader is 1.95% APY.)

There are definitely better deals out there, and you’ll find them if you compare Citi’s returns with the best CD rates from scores of other banks in our extensive database.
