The Good News: Citibank’s CD Rates Are Holding; Can You Guess The Bad News?

Although it claims to have highly competitive CD rates, that's only true if you consider competitive to mean average. We’re finding that CD rates at most big banks are holding steady these days. Citibank is no exception.

There’s been no movement in CD rates at this New York-based big bank with more than 1,000 branches since our October post.

And while we’re happy that Citi and other banks haven’t dropped rates, we wouldn’t mind seeing even just a little movement upward.

(Of course, we’re not holding our breath over here.)

Like other big banks, Citi sometimes varies its CD rates by region. Citi divides the United States into 16 regions, with the majority of states falling into its “national region.”

I checked all of the regions and found no variance.

With a minimum deposit of $500, Citi’s CD rates are all below average:

3-month CD rate is 0.15% APY versus an average rate of 0.16% APY. (Leaderboard leader is 0.60% APY.)

6-month CD rate is 0.15% APY versus an average rate of 0.22% APY. (Leaderboard leader is 0.85% APY.)

12-month CD rate is 0.25% APY versus an average rate of 0.34% APY. (Leaderboard leader is 1.15% APY.)

24-month CD rate is 0.30% APY versus an average rate of 0.53% APY. (Leaderboard leader is 1.26% APY.)

36-month CD rate is 0.50% APY versus an average rate of 0.70% APY. (Leaderboard leader is 1.55% APY.)

60-month CD rate is 1.01% APY versus an average rate of 1.15% APY. (Leaderboard leader is 1.95% APY.)
