Don’t build up points, just get your 50 bucks every time you hit that point. I have been trying to get up to the $200 mark for over a year now so that I could also get the $50 bonus, of course CHASE is changing the rules on Oct 30th so no $50 bonus for me (the worst part is I am up to 198.72, so close yet so far)

The $250 for $200 still exists for some who have not been downgraded yet, but many people have already been phased out. I am figuring it is only a matter of time for me. As of Oct 2009 it is still being offered on my account. I have been shopping and thought both the Fidelity and Schwab potential (Schwab more). I also have been looking at Pentagon Federal Credit Union which doesn’t have the brokerage/checking account requirement but does require a affiliation with the government or getting a 1 time membership for $20.

Jared, I searched and searched for $250 for $200 offer. I used the code you provided (F2558) and nothing. I actually redeemed this identical offer back in June (before it disappeared). I tried searching using the “item number” from my previous order. Didn’t work. I do believe the offer is no more. I wonder how you found it. I would sure like to redeem it if it still exists.

I agree with Rachel and Anne. I have used the Chase freedom card for years. 3% cash back is now gone. Got same letter, very confusing. Will be looking for another card. The Schwab cards sounds like the best cash back.

I agree with Rachel 100%, even to the point where I have switched over to using the Schwab card almost exclusively. I have been a Chase Freedom cardholder for years, and recently got a letter regarding the changes to the rules. It was quite confusing, but bottom line the 3% is being downgraded to 1% (plus what amounts to a few extra cents thrown on top of your bonus cash for Chase checking customers). In the mailing, they also said that the $50 extra cash ontop of the $200 cash bonus is being phased out (I think by the end of the month). The only problem I ever had with Chase was bad customer service on rare occasions (to the point where the customer service rep maliciously wrote lies about our encounter and I called up to complain and they brushed me under the rug), but I must admit that I am currently quite happy with Schwab (probably due to the 2% cash they have provided for me).

Ugh. I did a quick calculation on how much I would earn on this card verses the Schwab 2% back card. (Basically because I was peeved with Chase.) I still am accruing my cash up to $200 and then I am jumping ship. I have has this card for going on three years and they have done much to upset me. First I wanted a credit increase, didn’t get it. When to my other credit card (Citi) and they gave it to me without even pulling my report. (Needed to buy a new AC home unit and figured I could make a little money off the purchase.) Then they bounced around for ages on what items would get 3% back.
So in the end I will make more money using my new Schwab card even after the extra 50 bucks, which I guess a lot of new customers don’t even have the option for.

We feel your pain!

The credit card companies are clamping down on bonuses, points, 0% financing, air miles — you name it. You just can’t get the deals that were offered only a few months ago.

There are a lot of cards out there and we try to feature the ones with the most to offer to a wide variety of consumers. But no one card fits all.

Keep on letting us know what you value in credit cards and we’ll keep trying to find them — but the pool of good deals is shrinking rapidly.

This card is not what it used to be and I have pulled it out of my wallet. What on earth are rotating categories??? I got an entire booklet explaining the new and *cough* improved benefits and I still could not determine how the new program will work. The one good thing that did come of this was that I was prompted to go out and find a new card and I can honestly say there are a few that put this one to shame. In my opinion, don’t bother with Chase Freedom.

The benefits on this card have been severely downgraded. Used to be 3 percent on your top three purchase categories — whatever they were, from month to month. Now it’s 3 percent on categories THEY choose. Also, there IS an annual fee (I think it’s $35) after the first year.

They’re starting to get stingy though. Used to offer a $50 bonus once you’ve acquired enough points for $200. No longer.

Don’t build up points on this card. Grab your cash and run before they change the rules again.

The beauty of getting cash back is that you never have to worry whether you are able to “redeem” your cash like you do with points or other rewards. Cold hard cash is cold hard cash
