CD Rates Leaderboard For Sept. 21, 2011: New Leaders Offer Top 6-, 12-Month Deals

This is a great page to bookmark so you can always find the best nationally available deals on the most popular CD rates.AloStar Bank of Commerce cut its CD rates today, which means we have new nationally available deals in both the 6- and 12-month terms.

Five banks share or own the lead in those terms on our CD Rates Leaderboard.

AloStar, the online bank based in Birmingham, Ala., cut every rate it offers: 3, 6, 12 and 24 months by between 5 one-hundredths and one-quarter of a percentage point.

It had held at least one top spot on our Leaderboard since April. Now it holds none.

Four banks now offer the top 6-month CD rate of 1.00% APY. They are:

Aurora Bank (, with branches in Wilmington, Del., and Jersey City, N.J., which requires a $1,000 minimum deposit.

Ascencia Bank (, the online division of PBI Bank in Louisville, Ky., which requires a $500 minimum deposit., the online division of Landmark Bank in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., which requires a $2,500 minimum deposit.

Goldwater Bank (, with a single location in Scottsdale, Ariz., which requires a $5,000 minimum deposit.

AloStar also slipped out of the lead for 12-month certificates of deposit.

Sallie Mae Bank (, the online bank of the big student loan company, which pays 1.20% APY and has no minimum balance requirements, now owns the best nationally available deal.

Banks qualify for our rankings by accepting deposits from all savers, regardless of where they live, either online or through the mail.
