CD Rates Leaderboard For March 9, 2012: A Better Offer Arrives For 3-Month CDs

This is a great page to bookmark so you can always find the best nationally available deals on the most popular CD rates. One month to the day since we last had a change atop the CD Rates Leaderboard, a new leader has emerged.

For the first time since early January, Virtual Bank no longer offers the top nationally available 3-month CD rates.

E-LOAN (, an online division of Banco Popular North America, now offers a slightly better deal.

Banco Popular North America is the U.S. division of a large Puerto Rican bank that has 100 branches in New York, California, Florida, Illinois and New Jersey.

With a $10,000 minimum deposit, E-LOAN pays 0.65% APY on its 3-month CD.

That’s a bit better than the 0.60% APY offer from Virtual Bank (, the online division of Sabadell United Bank, based in Miami, which requires a $10,000 minimum deposit.

Three other banks offer 3-month CD rates of at least 0.50% APY.

They are:

EverBank (, a predominantly online bank based in Jacksonville, Fla., which requires a $1,500 minimum deposit. It dropped its rate slightly today to 0.54% APY.

Hudson City Savings Bank (, which has 130 branches in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut, requires a $500 minimum deposit for anyone living in that tri-state area but a $5,000 minimum deposit for everyone else. It pays 0.50% APY.

KeySource Commercial Bank (, which has a single branch in Durham, N.C., requires a $100 minimum deposit for CDs purchased in person, over the phone or through the mail, and a $5,000 minimum deposit if purchased online. It also pays 0.50% APY.

Banks qualify for our rankings by accepting deposits from all savers, regardless of where they live, either online or through the mail.

Compare these returns with the best CD rates from scores of banks in our extensive database.

The lower rates at EverBank and Virtual Bank are still in effect. The other banks are still offering the rates noted above.
