CD Rates Leaderboard For March 20, 2013

The National Republic Bank of Chicago’s reign lasted just a week.

The commercial bank has cut its rates by about a quarter percentage point, dropping its 36- and 60-month terms from the top of our CD Rates Leaderboard.

The cuts also mean the top nationally available certificates of deposit have once again fallen below 2% APY.

Barclays (, the online American operation of the big British bank, and Green Bank (, an eco-friendly bank with 12 Texas locations, are back atop the Leaderboard, offering 1.85% APY on 5-year CDs.

The Barclays CD has no minimum deposit requirement; you’ll need to deposit at least $1,000 to purchase a CD at Green Bank.

And Texas-based NexBank (, which pays 1.40% APY, offers the best 3-year deal. NexBank requires a $10,000 minimum deposit.

Even with the large rate cuts, National Republic Bank continues to offer competitive rates.

At 1.76% APY, its 60-month CD is the third-best nationally available offer. Its 1.26% APY 36-month CD is the sixth best offer we’re tracking.

Banks qualify for our rankings by imposing no restrictions on who can buy their certificates of deposit, either online or through the mail.

Compare these returns with the best CD rates from scores of banks in our extensive database.
