CD Rates Leaderboard For June 28, 2012: Best Rate In 36-Month Term Falls A Bit

This is a great page to bookmark so you can always find the best nationally available deals on the most popular CD rates. It’s been five months since a bank named something other than AmTrust Direct led the 36-month rankings on our CD Rates Leaderboard.

And nearly nine months since the online division of Cleveland-based AmTrust Bank cut rates.

But cut them it did, which means we have a new term leader.

The top nationally available 36-month CD now belongs to Doral Bank Direct, the online bank of Doral Bank.

It pays 1.50% APY with a $1,000 minimum deposit.

Doral Bank is the leading community bank in Puerto Rico. It also has five branches in northwest Florida and two in New York City.

Savers can buy these certificates of deposit at www.doralbankdirect.com.

AmTrust’s cut was large enough — it now pays 1.35% APY — that it ranks fifth among the top deals available to savers nationwide.

Here are the other offers that compete with Doral Bank Direct:

Barclays (www.banking.barclaysus.com), which is the online American operation of the big British bank, pays 1.45% APY with no minimum deposit.

CIT Bank (www.bankoncit.com), the online consumer bank of CIT Group Inc., which offers financing to small businesses and middle-market companies, pays 1.42% APY and requires a $1,000 deposit.

The National Republic Bank of Chicago (www.nrbchicago.com), which has two branches in Chicago, pays 1.41% APY with a $1,000 minimum deposit.

Over on our list of the nation’s highest CD rates from credit unions and local banks, we have 15 deals that beat what Doral Bank Direct offers, including a nationally available deal from Melrose Credit Union.

Go check ’em out.

Banks qualify for our Leaderboard rankings by accepting deposits from all savers, regardless of where they live, either online or through the mail.

We don’t include credit unions because of the restrictions they place in order to open an account.

That doesn’t necessarily make these deals any less valuable (although there are sometimes fees to join); it just means you have to jump through a few more hoops.

Compare these returns with the best CD rates from scores of banks in our extensive database.
