CD Rates Leaderboard For July 27, 2012: 60-Month CDs Fall Below 2% Again

This is a great page to bookmark so you can always find the best nationally available deals on the most popular CD rates. The best that can be said is, we hope you grabbed them while they lasted.

Those 2%, 5-year CD rates are gone just as quickly as they arrived.

And the top 36-month CD rates have now fallen below 1.50% APY, as well.

A bad day for savers.

This news comes courtesy of the National Bank of Kansas City, which today cut its term-leading 36- and 60-month CD rates.

That’s too bad because we were enjoying the bit of sunshine this Overland Park, Kan.-based bank brought to the CD Rates Leaderboard.

National Bank of Kansas City trimmed its 60-month CD from 2.02% APY to 1.76% APY and its 36-month CD from 1.51% APY to 1.31% APY. That’s still competitive but falls well short of the best deals.

This means the top nationally available 5-year CD once again belongs to The National Republic Bank of Chicago ( It pays 1.91% APY with a $1,000 minimum deposit.

National Republic Bank has two branches in the city of Chicago.

The best 3-year CD available to all savers once again belongs to Doral Bank Direct (, the online division of Doral Bank.

You’ll earn 1.45% APY with a $1,000 minimum deposit.

Doral Bank is the leading community bank in Puerto Rico, which also has five branches in northwest Florida and two in New York City.

Doral cut its top rate earlier this week from 1.50% APY, meaning this is the first time we’ve seen this term slip this low.

Like we said, a bad day for savers.

Banks qualify for our Leaderboard rankings by accepting deposits from all savers, regardless of where they live, either online or through the mail.

We don’t include credit unions because of the restrictions they place in order to open an account.

That doesn’t necessarily make those deals any less valuable (although there are sometimes fees to join); it just means you have to jump through a few more hoops.

Compare these returns with the best CD rates from scores of banks in our extensive database.
