CD Rates Leaderboard For Jan. 6, 2012:
Six New Leaders Emerge In Three Terms

This is a great page to bookmark so you can always find the best nationally available deals on the most popular CD rates. There was a lot of movement today on the CD Rates Leaderboard, and it’s all bad.

Let’s start with 60-month CDs.

The best-paying nationally available bank CD has fallen under 2% APY for the first time after Hudson City Savings Bank cut its rates today.

Two banks now pay 1.95% APY.

You can earn that rate at both Intervest National Bank ( and Tennessee Commerce Bank ( Both banks require a $2,500 minimum deposit.

Intervest has one branch in New York City and six branches in Florida. Tennessee Commerce has a single location in Franklin, Tenn.

We mentioned earlier this week several options for savers in all 50 states that pay better than what you’ll find on our Leaderboard. That’s even more true now.

Among the best options:

Melrose Credit Union ( boasts the highest 60-month CD rates available to savers nationwide at 2.68% APY with a $5,000 minimum deposit. This New York institution raised its CD rates in August and has left them unchanged ever since. Melrose is open to anyone who pays a $1 membership fee and deposits $25 in a savings account.

U.S. Bank pays 2.25% APY on 59-month CDs with a $1,000 minimum deposit. U.S. Bank sells its certificates of deposit online, at branches or over the phone.

New leaders also emerged in 3- and 6-month CDs.

Three banks offer 0.60% APY on 3-month CDs. They are:

  • Hudson City Savings Bank (, which has 130 branches in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut, and requires a $500 minimum deposit for anyone living in that tri-state area but a $5,000 minimum deposit for everyone else.
  • Virtual Bank (, the online division of Lydian Private Bank, based in Palm Beach, Fla., which requires a $10,000 minimum deposit.
  • Sanibel Captiva Community Bank (, which has three branches in southwest Florida and requires a $1,000 minimum deposit.

The new leader in 6-month CDs is Virtual Bank, which pays 0.85% APY.

Banks qualify for our rankings by accepting deposits from all savers, regardless of where they live, either online or through the mail.

Compare these returns with the best CD rates from scores of banks in our extensive database.
