Bethpage Federal Credit Union in New York has joined the big bank backlash, offering a guaranteed fee-free checking account for life for those who open a new account.

PNC Bank isn’t exactly enticing people to switch to a free checking account, but it is offering you $100 to move your money to its Performance Spend account.

Fidelity Bank (www.fidelitybank.com) of Wichita, Kans., and its sister Oklahoma Fidelity Bank offer fee-free checking – and will even pay you for debit card use.

If you haven’t already, mark Nov. 5 in your calendar. Some 37,000 savers already have. That’s the number of people as of this weekend who have RSVP’d on Facebook for “Bank Transfer Day,” a protest created by Los Angeles art gallery owner Kristen Christian.

Good news. There are still plenty of fee-free options out there. Some even pay interest, dish out rewards or reimburse ATM fees.

It was only a matter of time that some bank or credit union would take advantage of the big banks’ foolishness on checking and debit card fees.

Resource Bank pays 4.09% APY on its reward checking account, which puts it on par with the best national deal, but Resource Bank is paying the top rate on balances up to $25,000.

As of Oct. 1, the Waukegan, Ill. credit union cut its tiered rates for larger balances.

Citi says that later this year it will begin charging customers who own an Easy Checking Package account $15 per month unless they keep $6,000 in their checking account.
