California Deal On CDs Anyone Can Buy

You'll need to open a checking account at Stanford Federal Credit Union to earn the best rates.A credit union that caters to the students and faculty of Stanford University also offers top 5-year CD rates to savers nationwide — if you open a checking account.

Stanford Federal Credit Union pays 2.06% APY on its 60-month CDs with a $1,000 minimum deposit.

That’s about a quarter of a percentage point better than the top-paying bank deal on our CD Rates Leaderboard.

It ranks slightly below the top nationally available credit union deals on our list of the highest CD rates from credit unions and local banks.

This Palo Alto-based credit union with 47,000 members has four branches in and around the Stanford campus.

To be eligible for its top CD rates, you must open a checking account and place at least $500 a month into the account via direct deposit. Its eChecking account is the simplest and has no minimum balance, no monthly service fee and free ATM use within the CO-OP and Allpoint networks.

When you join, you’ll be asked to deposit at least $50 into your checking account.

Stanford FCU offers CDs without the checking account obligation, but the rates are significantly lower.

Membership is open to Stanford University students and faculty; members, employees and volunteers of the Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce; and employees of the companies that are members of the Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce.

Savers anywhere can become credit union members by joining one of two organizations, the Museum of American Heritage or Friends of Palo Alto Libraries. Museum membership costs $20, while the library organization charges $15 for individual memberships.
