The large regional bank BB&T is offering a $125 sign-up bonus for people who open a new checking account by May 31.
The bank, based in Winston-Salem, N.C., offers the bonus to residents of the 12 states where it operates, which are primarily in the South, and the District of Columbia.
To take advantage of the offer, you must click on the “Get Started” tab at the bank’s promotion page — www.bbt.com/plus125 — which will take you to a page to open a BB&T Bright Banking checking account.
Opening the account requires a $50 minimum deposit, and the account carries a $10 monthly fee unless you meet one of several requirements for getting the fee waived.
The requirements vary by state but are relatively simple.
In Florida, for example, you can avoid the monthly fee by receiving a $100 monthly direct deposit, maintaining a $1,500 average balance in your account or having $6,000 in combined deposit products on loan balances.
Once your account is open, you’ll need to make at least three online bill payments of at least $25 or receive at least two direct deposits of at least $100 within 90 days.
Then you’ll receive the $125 bonus in your account within 120 days of opening the account.
Because you need to receive direct deposits to receive the bonus, it should be relatively easy to meet the requirements to have the monthly fee waived.
The Bright Banking account doesn’t pay interest, but that doesn’t matter. BB&T accounts that pay interest aren’t really worth it.
