I just invested into Key (as a member, you earn a higher rate)

Great customer service as long as you follow up! I am a Key member so I started receiving interest the DAY AFTER after 2 phone calls!

Overall, it’s a decent time to invest. I’ve been waiting 3 months for rates to raise (particularly from Key)

Hope y’all lock in a great rate!

opened an account several years ago, was getting over 5% now only 2.75. they told me it would not change when I opened the account. now they never told me that it did change. only good thing is this account is easy to work with on- line.

Service is excellent.Set up was a breeze.Rates are very good.I wired in 9:00am and Keydirect CSR called me by noon to let me know my wire was received and my accounts are funded and acrewing interest.Staff very Knowledgeable and friendly

Opened 2 accounts,Have to do changes by mail,calling will get you no ware.CSR will tell you OK but it wont change anything till its official by mail.I guess this can cut both ways,I know my money is safe heck I cant even get to it.I do have my intrest ACHed to my other bank no foul ups so far.

Read carefully the huge spate of short, negative reviews below – all one-star. Many are clearly copied and pasted repeatedly. One guy is pissed, so you are seeing a low rating. Key did a fine job for me (see my posting just below – imhodudes). Not fair to trash people who are providing good service.

I really have no complaints here. I opened two accounts – a CD and money market. Their method of handling online accounts requires more phone calls than some other institutions, but they answer the phone quickly, are helpful and polite, and the calls are toll-free. I’ve definitely had worse experiences with setting up accounts at other banks. Hard to imagine what these masses of complaints from other reviewers are about . . .?? Not many places have these high longer term 5% rates now – I was with Virtual Bank when they were the highest, but they’ve dropped *way* down.

Bottom line for me: if you want a long term 5% CD (maybe a good idea, maybe not) then just give these guys a call and set it up. I’m going long term just so I don’t have to futz with some of my $$ for a while – it’s a drag going 90 days at a time to get other institutions’ highest rates which are not even as high as KeyDirect’s. Worst case, one year interest penalty if I decide to back out or need the money later.

Site is always down! Their site goes down everyday right around 10pm and the outage lasts for hours. I normally do all my banking late in the evenings and this is a serious problem.

Two weeks ago, I called and was told our application was denied and would be getting a letter in the mail soon. On the 27th, I called again and was told by the first person that we were denied and that there is no way of knowing why until the letter comes (still have not received any letter). worst banking experience i’ve ever had. their bank to bank transfer process is extremely slow and if they suspend your bank to bank transfers impossible to reinstate it. i’m taking my banking elsewhere.

It took extremely long to open the account. Disinformation given at the phone, when discussing with several customer service reps. You may want to go with a different bank.

The customer service is poor. It was really hard to set-up the account, with alot of snail mail verifications. Even hard to close account (had to draw account balance to zero, then send a copy of my drivers license to actually close the account).

I established an account at this bank for the good rate, but also to show support for the Banks outreach to low/moderate income people. Sorry to say I closed my account and wont come back, even for a good rate.

They froze my account by accident thereby locking up over $65,000 of my money. I closed my account immediately as soon as their mistake was corrected.

Found this bank on bankguy blog,researched it found out its a huge bank.The phone service was OK.I got my three accounts open and funded without a hitch.

They will transfer you back and forth to different people who can’t help you and tell you to call another number. Never heard anything back from them after I signed up online, and I had to talk to 4 people before I could find someone who could tell me the status of my account. Everyone kept telling me, you need to go to your branch. (a) I signed up online, so why should I have to go into a branch? (b) this bank HAS NO BRANCHES in my state! What am I supposed to do, get on a plane and fly to a state that does?

Once, I was placed on hold for 10 minutes, then the CSR took my number and said he’d call back – never did. While in the process of setting up my transfer account, they closed my account because I didn’t transfer any funds yet!

I would stay away, this bank is an absolute nightmare staffed by utter and complete morons.

The last two times I dealth with KD, I received a survery call asking about their service. Like all online banks, easy to put the money in, very difficult to take it out. There are many rules (read whole bank section of patriot act to you) and a huge bunch of sneaky fees. The websites confuse one between the branches and the online bank. Same corp. but entirely different staffs. Rates are often best offered in a category but you must take a lot of time, listen to all rules and be aware locked in rates are possible. Mail in checks are easiest, get PO handstamp on envelope, it counts with KD. They operate with rules not like most internet banks. Also close out all states with branch banks unless you do business from forwarded address – a huge pain and hardly worth the effort. We have old accounts there so are accepted though NY is excluded from KeyDirect for new accts.

Interest posted no problem no tax with holdings as others have posted.Signed up for the 5 year 5.26%,added POD`s no problem, Canceled my monthly ACH xfer`s No problem. I have had no problems with this bank,Im so sorry for all the folks that are having such problems.Perhaps because this is actually two banks Keydirect and Keybank for all intent and purposes are separate entities

Deserves negative stars. It took over four months to get the account set up correctly. During this time they withheld taxes on interest claiming I had not returned paperwork. I did twice! They also lock you out of your online access if you make any change to the account like linking an outside account for ach transfers. A case study for how NOT to operate.

By far this is the WORST bank I have ever TRYED to deal with. From trying to just open a simple online account. The CUSTOMER service is the WORST in the industry. The right hand has NO CLUE what the left hand is doing. STAY FAR AWAY from this imcompetent bank. I wouldnt put a PENNY in it.
There are many other banks to choose from.
Unless you like to HOLD and get TRANSFERRED constantly, find another one.

Their external link process requiring phone confirmation is long and tedious. But overall I have to say that their service has always been excellent. Rates are very good. And most important, in these days of chaos in the industry they seem solid and still receive a good rating on Bankrate

I got may account number within one week by mail, but it took me a month to get checks, still no debit card.

However, after waiting all that time, I realized I could have gone online with the account number I received and signed up for online banking, which seem to work okay.

Transfers seem far easier to set up using outside accounts than using Key banks transfer feature, since Keybank requires telephone verification of each linked account. When I finally got through to them, I didnt have all the details of each account, and will have to call back. Annoying.

Rates good, service bad.
Each time you link a new account to transfer they lock you accont for verification purposes, then never call you, so you have to call them to reset online access. Most recently, online access has decided I am using a different computer and locks me out. Time to write a huge check and call it quits.

They have limited ACH transfer to/from external banks to 2000 per day. What a pain.

Also they do bait and switch: every year they rename their high yield account so advertised rate is only for the accounts with new name while rate on the old accounts is dropped. But you can see it only in the statements.

They have just gone down to 5.25 as of this week, but that is still not bad! I just signed up and am awaiting my welcome package. Its annoying to have to wait, but as long as its not several weeks to a month, thats ok. Im worried now, though, based on all the horror stories people have written below, but I will just keep my fingers crossed and hope that they are improving and not scam artists. So far, CS has been fine to me

I have tried to deal with the Brick and Mortar Key Bank. They are a disaster! Scrambled my application and comingled address information on multiple accounts on which I was joint owners. Had to go in person to the bank 3 times to straighten their mess out. I was trying to open a $150K deposit, so they should have paid attention to me. Not devious, just incompetent.
