GMAC Bank Reviews & Ratings

I’ve had my account for 18 months and really like it. Low minimum, good rate, checks, ATM card and monthly paper statements. Transfers are very quick. I have been very pleased!

Easy to open this account. My skepticism is in the “welcome” packet that comes AFTER you open the account. They basically tell you, after, that they will sell your name info to others. not happy bout that.

I’ve put money into CDs at GMAC two or three times in the past. I have had no problems opening accounts or withdrawing my money. Great rates and a painless process for me.

After reading other reviews, I decided to send a check rather than trying the electronic transfer of funds. Within a few days, I received my packet and I immediately returned a check. The turnover was about 10 days from start to check clearing and I locked in the rate which I wanted in that time. This was no hassle for a CD.

I was on hold for 1 hour and 1455 minutes. Just to set up my on-line acount. Yep, you heard it “on-line acct” You must call the bank to finish your account. The rates are good but the customer service sucks. I just hope I can get my monies out in time of maturity.

Since my sole criteria for this chunk of the portfolio was a safe quiet return, the GMAC offer and expertise were on-target. It’s the quiet cove in a turbulent global financial scene.

Posted On: 5/16/2008
I was skeptical after reading reviews but because of the rate I tried it anyways. Application process was simple, transfer was made promptly, no problems at all.

This online application was a nightmare. Password doesn’t work and no one answers the phone. I have never seen such poor management.

Posted On: 5/15/2008
I called several times to complete my 1 year CD application and no one answers the phones – just plays music after you ask to speak with a rep.

Putting money INTO this bank was bad enough …. an experience that took 10 days. I only hope and prey that I can GET IT OUT when the time comes. Wish me luck people.

This will be my last experience with this bank,

Posted On: 5/14/2008
I called, they helped… no problem!!
Easy all the way!

Posted On: 5/09/2008
Terrible and nightmare experience of phone service. They are experience the high volume of calls and you have to wait AT LEAST 15 minutes, I don’t have a time to hold that long. After 15 attempts of tring to call them in 10 days fell. I gave up about buying CDs here.

Posted On: 5/06/2008
I just tried to open a 1 year CD online. At the end of the online process, I got a message saying to call the 1-888 number to complete the process. So I did. After several minutes of wading through the voice menus, I sat on hold for 12 minutes. Then I hung up and opened a CD account online with IndyMac Bank instead.

The money one deposit starts earning interest from the moment it is deposited, in relasionship with other banks which it would take 3 to 5 days for one’s money to earn interest. This bank has an excelent policy. Customer service is prompt and they seem to be know about their business. The money transfer was prompt and reliable.

Have been trying to open an account (CD) for almost 2 wks. After sttempts with online were unseccesful I printed the application and mailed it with my check. They didnt ask to submit a copy of my Drivers Licence, just the number. One week later a received a phone call asking for a copy. I faxed it the same day.
didnt hear anything for 4 days and called. The said they either didnt receive it or it was unreadable. Meanwhile my check is sitting somewhere in their office. Now I must mail them a copy of my License when they should have asked for it in the beginning. I am waitng 5 more days and then will cancel the whole thing. Some of the staff do not appear to be knowledgeable.

I opened a money market account with them back when they were in the 4% range. Eventually rates fell enough that I was able to find better deals.

Their service was outstanding during this time, I received atm cards, checks and the works. When I decided to close the account it was simple and they were courteous.

I am back because the CD rates are 3.9% for 12 months and that is looking attractive.

Highly recommend.

I set up a transfer into a 6 month and a 9 month CD, and within the same amount of time that my other online accounts take, my transaction was completed.

Yes, there is fine print that you will get the rate when your money actually posts, but this is true with any bank, online or in person.

I shopped around, and these rates were higher than any others that I deal with. I’m sold on ING Direct, but GMAC beat their rates by over a point.

The website is user friendly and informative. The security features are top rate. I had no problems whatsoever, and will most likely do more business here whenever the rates are competitive.

Opened an online account and wanted to fund a CD for $100,000.00. Wanted to have an EFT done. Never heard a word from them for 8 days. Never sent me the forms, information or made the small deposits into my account. They do not lock your rate. From the time I opened the account online the rate dropped from 4% to under 3%. I had to call twice and finally told them to just forget it and close my account. What a waste of my time.

Good Decent CD Rates.
Little complex to open account . Need to call and verify. but overall smooth process.

I opened a Money Market account with these people in December when the rate was 4.5%
Just closed the account today with the rate 3.5%.
Closing the account had nothing to do with the lower rate. I tend to be a loyal customer. What happened was I never received my pin for the ATM card – “It came in a plain white envelope” I was told. Might have thrown it away with junk mail.
So I needed a new pin.
The two woman that I spoke to were both “superior” in attitude and indifferent to delivering any type of customer service at all. Their attitudes turned me off completely.
I am surprised that so many people here rave about GMAC customer service. Not my experience. I am moving my money to Corus when I receive the transfer ‘in 3-5 days’ hopefully.

I’ve just terminated my account at GMAC Bank because of the dropping rates. However, I couldn’t be more happy with the quality of their customer service. Everyone I talked to was so friendly, and no questions asked (they probably knew the reason already) when you close the account. If their rates go up again, I would definitely return!

Posted On: 2/12/2008
GMAC will display a very attractive rate on the web. But when you get right down to it. As soon as you deposit your money they drop the rate. Currently they claim 4% on your money,Im earning 3.5%. The reason I opened this account is because they offered 4.5%. They bate and hook to get your money.

I have experienced top notch customer service during my short span with this bank. My every encounter has been especially pleasant considering the number of requests I have bestowed upon them. I just hope their rates can creep back up. Highly recommended!

Good service but low rates compared to competitors and past rates. GMAC had held higher rates consistently but have recently dropped substantially-a disappointment for its customers.

Greate bank. Easy to set up external accounts. Great customer service. Website security one of the best out there and allows for very strong passwords. I would give it 5 stars but the rate has just dropped to low compared to how competitive GMAC used to be. Still, if you are looking for a good bank with an easy to use website that isnt hard to transfer any mount of money in or out at a time, then you should strongly consider GMAC. I have been with them for two years now and I am still very happy.

Extremely easy to navigate website and fairly decent customer service as long as you can navigate the phone system Their online/email service is good though. A passable interest rate, although it dropped from what I signed up at 5.35 to 4.5 almost immediately after I signed up, which kind of sucked. But still, I use this account basically as my main checking account for the easy accessibility and the ease of transferring between other accounts. Its kind of like my ridge account. Really, the only reason Im not giving it 5 stars is because of that sudden drop in interest rate, which seems about par for course lately. Still, a great site and barring unforseen events, I think Ill be keeping this account for a long time.

Oh, word to the wise though: this is a money market: dont go over the allotted 6 transactions a month, because there is a fee (duh, but Im still relatively new to this)…it does keep track of your transactions for you though, so keep an eye on that and youre golden; another plus is that they only count transfers out of the account against you – you have unlimited inbound transfers.

Ive been with GMAC for about 6 months. Online interface is clean and easy to use. Very easy to transfer funds from external accounts. Although rates have recently dropped, Ill continue to keep my account open.

GMAC lost my mailed check for 3 weeks. At their advice, I stopped payment on the check & sent another. Then they found and cashed the first one & charged me a fee because I had stopped payment on it & it bounced. I have switched to another bank. Good rates & covenient on line, but they recommend to never use mail for transactions.

My review was posted on 10/13/07. I gave 5 stars. I dont know why it is showing up as 1.

I opened my account with them in May and I havent had any problems. You have easy access to your money (with checks & an ATM card) and a good interest rate. They have droped their rate though. I opened it at 5.28 APY, then the prime rate was reduced and it went to 4.9 APY. Now it is 4.75. I opened an account with igobanking.com, but I am keeping the GMAC account because it is easy to access my money and they are very reliable. Im pretty sure they do refund other banks ATM fees (up to a certain amount). But I dont take money out unless its an emergency.

Have been with them for 4 months. Very easy to open, fair and just. Web site well protected. Yous should like them.

Posted On: 9/21/2007
Only 4.9% APY now for 500$ . They dont say anything about refunding atm fees, the just dont charge you if you use another banks atm. But that bank may charge you. Only the first check order is free btw.

Good account by me. Good rate and no problems in over a year with deposits or withdrawls. Web/e-mail based customer service is reasonably responsive (an answer in 24 hours in the few occasions Ive needed it).

Posted On: 9/14/2007
what a bunch of dumm fuks, was gonna deposit close $100,000. They couldnt get past the fact that Im not at my permanent address, Im on government TDY…the guy I talked to seemed like he didnt even listen.. what a bunch of bozos.

Posted On: 9/12/2007
Horrible customer service. I would advise not to use gmac

Posted On: 8/29/2007
No problems here. Very good rate, very easy to use. Needs a couple of days to set up bank-to-bank transfers, after that you can move money between accounts very easily.

I was previously with ING (actually I still have some money there), and I find GMAC easier to deal with and with a money market rate thats 0.8% better.

I have been with GMAC bank for over a year. The interest rate is in the top 6, I like the free checks and ATM card they REFUND ATM FEES!!!!! have had no problems although when you open an internet account, be sure to get everything taken care of properly (i.e. linking to your local bank, etc). I like the internal built-in bank email feature if I have a quick comment or question. Have had no technical problems. ACH money transfers take the usual 2 business days. Will be proud to stay with GMAC.

Posted On: 8/01/2007
Just opened an account with them, and they have a technical issue which prevents me from actually seeing the account. That might be understandable, but they will give me no answer as to when this be resolved – always told 1-3 biz days and Im at the 6th day. Promises of supervisors calling me, but it never happens. Its a good rate, but I think Im moving my dollars to a bank who can get their technical act together.

Posted On: 7/15/2007
just opened a money market account. Ive done my research, both on this website and bankrate.com and I found GMAC to be best bank. This is why – high interest rate (not the highest), ACH origin and destination transfers (this allows free bank-bank transfers – Zions lacks this), online banking through Quicken (it doesnt have DirectConnect but you could atleast download to Quicken) and finally, a high rating on the CAEL ((Capitalization, Asset quality, Earnings and Liquidity numbers) ratings. And for good reason, the online application was real easy and their website is peppered with customer service numbers/emails.
