ETRADE Bank Reviews & Ratings

I currently have an account with these guys but I find the website hard to navigate with useless information getting in the way. Would not you think you could go to the site, see the current interest rate on the spot, see how much interest you made that month. I should not have to dig for this stuff. If the interest rate drops you’ll never know. You would have to call and wait for customer service. If the rate changes I want to know!

Apparently, account approval is seamless for some, but not for all. My experience is similar to several others–I apply, hear nothing. I call. I fax in SSN & DL. Still nothing. I call. They ask when I sent in fax. Still nothing. It appears that they will approve my account when they get around to it. Luckily I only opened with $100 because I won’t see it until whoever gets around to opening my account. The CS rep actually said that they do not have the reps to field all of their questions. So don’t expect good service if anything goes wrong. I opened ING Direct on first try and have been earning (less) interest since, but at least I am earning something.

i have been banking with e trade for a year and i highly recommend E TRADE. 100000% great.

I opened saving account on E-trade about two weeks ago, and everything went smoothly. It took a long time to verify the initial deposit, but for the second, third, fourth, etc ACH transfer is very fast.
The rate is only 3.45%, but I like this bank because the interest is compounded daily. It is a good place to store your unused money.

I had tried both INGDIRECT and HSBCDIRECT before E-Trade and E-Trade came away the overall winner. The set-up process was not hard at all (I don’t know what the other reviewers were talking about). Not hard at all. Transfers between different accounts (Stocks, IRA’s, etc..) were easy to use as well.

Yes, the drop from 4.1% to 3.45% recently wasn’t good, but I feel will even out in the end. With all of E-Trades other features, it has been the clear winner for me.

I set up the account two weeks ago. Set up went smoothly, but had to wait several days for the initial deposit to go through. Then I was able to link to accounts at other banks and the most recent quicktransfer went through in 24 hours.

Disappointed to see such a large drop in percentage rate (4.1 to 3.45)–understand that rates vary but this is a big change and puts Etrade more middle of the road.

I opened a savings account, however I have been unable to get E-Trade to make the deposit. They have a the check, but have “escalated” the issue to try to figure out why they have not made the deposit. I have heard the same story every other day for 3 weeks? They also promise to call you back the same business day by 3:00 P.M. I still have never received a call. Nice follow-up?

How’s 0% interest, because that is all I have received since sending E-Trade a check 33 days ago.

Put your money in a coffee can and bury it in the ground. This will save you alot of headaches and earn you the same interest rate.

what a big drop~~~~~~~~
if others don’t drop… i have no clue where to go…
wamu is terrible… they claim they are soooooo genuinely free!!! but they ARE NOT FREE at all…
so many fees and restrictions…
limit of 6 transactions in and out are terrible.. only transactions done online don’t count…
making card payments, direct deposit from employer, taking $$ in and out a couple times will easily let WAMU charge you 10 bux a month

their CS really sux too…. u’ll almost always get copy&paste replies

Excellent bank. Great features and fastest ACH I’ve used. Unfortunately, it’s now 3.45% APY (cut 65 basis points!!!). They shouldn’t cut by that much.

Account opening only took 5 days. Their electronic transfers work well. Am satisfied with the service and the money market interest rate. Compared to some on-line banks I have used this one is a keeper.

Dont even try to open an account. ZERO stars

When opening, even after you put all your information in, and are told that it will be 1-3 business days to get your information, you will get absolutely nothing from them.

Then after a week, if you call, they will ask for a copy of your ID and SSN card (if you have a joint name on your account, they will ask for theirs) Then if you send it in, you will get no correspondence. When you call again, you must provide them a date and time, and what number you sent the fax to. Then after 15 minutes, the rep will find it and say they will forward it to the account opening department.

3 weeks later, you will get a call, saying that need to call them back to verify more info.

If you call back, they will want you to send more ID and SSN cards for whomever else is on the account. If you refuse and ask them to cancel your application, they will say ok and hang up rudely.

Then two weeks later, you will get an email that says the account is now opened. The other account you put to fund the new etrade account will be deducted whatever amount.

If you dare, only put the minimum $1… Dont risk anything more than that!!

Shopper Beware… ING Direct was opened one week after I opened this account. They took one day to complete and it was ready to go. No BS about sending ID, SSN, etc…

I have used E*Trade for years and appreciate the flexibility of the various types of accounts they offer. I am very happy with their rates and like that both simple and complex transactions are usually possible to execute online on my own without dealing with telephone customer service queues. The few times that I have had to call, I have found a knowledgeable representative to help me.

They don’t even deserve one star! After a month of trying to get my account opened and talking to unintelligent customer service reps, I decided to cancel my application. I received a letter saying that an account was not opened for me due to info. not matching my wife’s credit report (although, they had told us that it was fine and that they had received the faxed info. showing that her name had changed when we got married). So, after talking to them for weeks to no avail, we thought we were finally done with them. But, a week later my wife and I both received an email saying that our account had been opened! We tried to close the account and get our $100 back they stole but we just kept getting the runaround. We finally got our bank to take the money back but the idiots at E-trade sent us a check also. So, we owed them $100! We told them to cancel the check and that we would not cash it. Hopefully our account is closed now but who knows. They have been such a huge pain!

Originally was not given $25 sign-up bonus. E-mail to customer service yielded results in two days. Still, I shouldn’t have had to e-mail them.

ACH transfers are fast. If I initiate the transaction Friday morning, sometimes both the account I’m withdrawing from and my etrade account will earn interest on the same funds over the weekend!

I signed up for an account after already having CD account with Etrade. I then never heard from them and my deposit never credited. I called them up and their foreign call center told me I needed to fax in a copy of my drivers license and SS card. I did so (althouth not comfortably) and never heard back. I called again and they told me the same thing. I did it again. I never heard from them. Finally they said, tell us the date and time of your fax and we’ll try to find it. They finally found it and opened my account. Too much trouble though.

Posted On: 2/16/2008
They could do a better job communicating some things after account opening. Otherwise very happy. Fastest ACH transfers I have found yet. Opened a free brokerage account and can now do the occasional stock trade and instantly transfer funds back and forth from the high yield savings to the brokerage.

I can see where people who gave bad reviews got confused. When you sign up for an E-trade savings account, you have to register for online access to your account and then there is a separate registration process to link your new savings account with your online general account. I could log in, but couldn’t access my money for the longest, so I called them on a Sat morning and got through right away. They told me to log into the account, click the “banking and credit cards tab”, then click the little green arrow towards the bottom that says “New Accounts click here”. They don’t send you any emails about this, the info comes in snail mail. You don’t start getting emails until you’ve linked your accounts.

I’ve had no problems since.

I just opened a savings acount on 8 Feb 08. As with others, my initial entry was a little bumpy. First, when I got the e-mail that my account was set up I couldn’t “see” it online. I called and was helped by a friendly and efficient woman. She told me to set up a new ID and password and then she linked the new savings account to it.

The next problem came when I tried to make a link between my external checking account and my e-trade savings. The message was “no eligible e-mail address” or something like that. I called customer service and the pleasant sounding man fixed the problem. I’m not sure why this account was such a pain to get started but I had no problem with their customer service. Hopefully, I’ll have no more problems.

It only took 2 days for my money to transfer from my external checking to the e-trade savings. So far, so good now that I’m set up. Can’t beat their rate.

The only way to contact these people is through their one number, which gets you connected to unhelpful and rude personnel. Like many others, I had a delay in hearing anything about my account when opened.

When it finally did go through I tried to access my account on the website, it was unable to find my account number (even though I was logged in and it showed a balance). I called their support and was put on and off hold for 2 hours while they tried to work out the problem. After being transferred among 3 different reps the person on the phone actually asked me what my password to access the site was.

Security 101: The customer service don’t need your password to access anything. This is true for any website, and there is no excuse that a financial institution would have such lax security. I had no faith in the company to handle my money after all this.

Always one of the highest interest rates available if you meet the tier levels. I have had this particular savings account since August of 2007, outstanding performance relative to other options out there for savings accounts. Once your outside accounts are added and verified, transfering money is simple. They seem to take around 5 business days to clear, but earn interest from the time of transfer being initiated. Because I also have an Etrade Visa, I have never withdrawwn cash from this account. Just transfers in and transfers out occasionally. Mostly it is in from an external checking and out as a payment on Etrade Visa. The Visa even gives you 1% cash back and after over 6 months, so far, I have not been charged any finance fees. There are monthly limits on the ammount of withdrawal transfers. Overall I am very pleased and satisfied with Etrade, from brokerage and credit to cd’s and savings, they have been great.

I was the one who posted on 1/06/2008. Here’s an update for everyone:

After faxing in my driver’s license and waiting about 5 days without anything happening, I figured Etrade was never going to open the account and had probably forgotten about me. I then applied at another bank and got my account set up and funded within a day.

After setting up an account with this new bank, I noticed that there was a pending transfer to Etrade showing on my checking account. So Etrade had finally decided to fund my account…but I didn’t want them to anymore. I called Etrade and asked if they could just cancel the transfer before it went through. The customer service lady said that they couldn’t do that, but my funds should be in the account and available for withdraw in 7 business days. So I waited…and waited… 10 days later, still no funds showing in my Etrade savings account. After numerous calls and weeks of waiting, with me receiving the same “I’m sorry about the inconvenience sir. Your funds should be available in the next few days” excuse, I was finally able to get my money out of this incompetent bank.

TAKES WEEKS TO SET UP AN ACCOUNT AND ANOTHER 2 WEEKS TO GET YOUR MONEY OUT. BANK AT YOUR OWN RISK!

I applied for their Complete Savings account over 2 weeks ago. After hearing nothing from them for a week, I called and they said they needed my wife’s driver’s license and our marriage certificate. I faxed them in, called the next day and they finally found it in their system after waiting awhile. I was told the account would be open in 3 days. I called after hearing nothing for 3 days and they had no record of me calling or that I had ever sent them anything. They just told me to “wait a couple more days.” The next day I got a call saying that I needed to send in our marriage certificate again. I called them and after searching their system, they found (again) the documents I had already faxed in a week earlier. Now I’ve been told to give them until Monday to get things taken care of.
E-trade’s service has been horrible. The associates sound like they don’t know what they’re talking about and they don’t seem very professional at all.
I wish I had applied to a different bank.

Just applied last week when it was 5% interest, no paperwork/not processed yet and it’s already down to 4.4%. Unreal!!! Going to WaMu…more stable and at 4.75% with Complete Savings Accout.

Posted On: 1/23/2008
they changed the rate to 4.40APY.

In early December 2007 I filled out application for C.D.online. Was accepted, gave me account # and password.Mailed them check return receipt. They have had my account & money for over a month.Recently received check back.Called several people at E-Trade, each said they would call me back- none have.I have lost over $300 in interest.Advise you to invest elsewhere. I have. BEWARE!

Further to my previous post of 1/14, as of today, 1/18, my E Trade savings account was finally opened. It was easy to get external transfer accounts set up and to set E Trade up to download into Quicken.

Posted On: 1/14/2008
I have been trying to open a high interest savings account at E Trade for one month now. They declined my request saying that I had issues with Chex Systems. I contacted Chex Systems and was told that they did NOT have any issues with me and sent a copy of my credit report. On Dec 18, I sent a copy of the Chex Systems credit report, along with an application, and my check for $25.00 to E Trade. On Jan 10, after numerous phone calls to E Trade, they finally decided to open my account. On Jan 11, I received my original $25.00 check with a letter saying that I was declined due to Chex Systems. On telephoning E Trade, they said to ignore that letter.
I do have an account number but then they asked for a copy of my drivers license on Jan 11. As of today, Jan 14, I still cannot log in. I am fed up but they are one of the few banks with a high interest rate that will download into Quicken.
I have come this far, therefore, I intend to see this through.

So far, I have been pleased and am anxious to continue using etrade. My greatest concern is their current business crisis. While deposits are FDIC insured, it may be a hassle to get the money. This may be an issue in the near future. Problem is that the interest rate is so good. So, for now, Ill continue with the risk…

Posted On: 1/08/2008
Everything seems good, but I had the same problems as a previous poster. I heard nothing from them. I had to call to find out that because my address didnt match what was on my drivers liscense, my account had been suspended temporarily. No word. We resolved the issue, I faxed my drivers liscense. Again, two days went by without a word. So I called and they said that my picture wasnt clear enough, and that I needed to blow it up. Kind of frustrating. For me though, it gets 4 because it has a good rate, good security, and I can do instant transfers between my savings and my active trading account.

Ive had my savings account for a year now and never had a problem with deposits or withdrawals.

Posted On: 1/06/2008
I filled out an application online to set up a savings account w/ them (this was on 12/30). I received an email that same day stating that my application had been received, they would begin processing the information immediately, and that my account should be opened within 1-2 business days. I checked back every day for 4 days and nothing had been done. I then called the customer support hotline and asked them what was up. They said that they had received my application, but that I would need to fax my drivers license to them so that they could verify my date of birth. Why they never sent me an email or anything notifying me of this I will never know… So anyway, I faxed in my drivers license and 2 days later still no word from them. This is very frustrating. I just want to open my account and start earning interest but ETRADE IS MAKING IT VERY DIFFICULT FOR SOME REASON!

Excellent Choice! Great customer service and online security is second to none!

Posted On: 1/02/2008
I had an Etrade savings account for over 5 months without any issues.

Posted On: 12/28/2007
Ive had an account for almosts 4 months now and I am VERY pleased with the service and user web interface. I had to phone them once and the customer service rep was an absolute gem. I couldnt be more happy… Unless the rate goes up!

Posted On: 11/29/2007
just went up to 5.05

Posted On: 11/07/2007
Have had a bank account with Etrade for 7 years. ATM/Debit card expired. No replacement sent. (This happened three years ago too). Rep on phone says they dont send out renewal cards unless you call and request one. I told him this was ridiculous for a bank with no branches.

Posted On: 11/06/2007
RATES NEED TO GO UP THERE DROPPING WAY TO FAST COME ON ETRADE BE #1

Posted On: 11/02/2007
I have used E*Trade for 6 years and never had an issue. Never needed to place a call because everything I have needed to do was available online.

Posted On: 10/30/2007
SO FAR HAS BEEN GOOD TRANFERS SEEM TO TAKE LONGER THAN THEY SHOULD BUT COULD DEAL WITH IT RATE NEEDS TO GO UP A LITTLE

Posted On: 10/11/2007
Didnt save my star right.

Posted On: 10/11/2007
Best ACH transfers. Great bank for the opening any types of accounts. Easy to close, just use their secure contact and you will get a response within 24h. Best online interface. Been a customer for 4 years.

Posted On: 8/05/2007
It took me three calls to get my ATM card for their High -Yield checking with ATM refund. When I finally got the card after almost a month, the PIN doesnt work so they have to send me a new PIN. I had to use my credit card for cash. That means I have to pay interest for cash advance and ATM fee. I lost more money with this bank. I was better off with my previous online bank.

etrade is ok

Posted On: 5/12/2007
nice alternative to the traditional big boys like HSBC and emigant

Posted On: 5/11/2007
Decent bank and convenient for those with brokerage account. APY rates are decent and low minimum deposit is good enough.

Posted On: 5/11/2007
Good bank that offer different options. Low deposit fee and decent APY.

Posted On: 5/10/2007
I recommeded this bank if you have a brokerage account…

Posted On: 5/10/2007
Easy to move money from brokerage account to savings, but the rate isnt great.

Posted On: 5/10/2007
convenient if you have a brokerage account with etrade.
